TWO NEW MEMBERS
HAWERA SCHOOL POARD The chairman of the Hawera Technical High School Board, Dr. W. M. Thomson, on Monday night welcomed two newlyelecled members, Mrs. W. C. Fyfe and, Mr. J. W. Archbold, both representatives j of the Parents' Association. In doing so, Dr. Thomson pointed out that the retiring members. Mrs. J. W. J. Harding and Mr. T. C. Hobbs, had servcd the board well over a period of many years and he expressed the hope that the new members would continue that work. As he had been absent from the previous meeting, Dr. Thomson took the opporlunity to add his appreciation for the work done by Mrs. Harding and Mr. Hobbs to that of his fellow members. The principal of the school, Mr. J. Dash, read the report of the inspectors who had visited the school earlier in the year. The chairman said that congratulations were due to the principal, the stafif and the pupils on the report. A proposal that the attention of the returning ofFicer be drawn to the term of office of members of the board was adopted. The principal, staff and pupils were thanked by Mr. Harding as secretary of the Hawera patriotic committee for the efl'orts they had made. He hoped that their interest would be maintained. It was decided to place on record the appreciation of the committee. Mr. Dash assured him that the school would continue its efforts. Dr. Thomson was re-elected chairman of the board and Mr. Murdoch was elected deputy-chairman. Various committees appointed were: Grounds and building. Messrs. J. Ross, W. M. Egglestone, E. Kirkby, J. B. Murdoch and L. Jennings; furniture and equipment, Mrs. Fyfe and Mr. J. W. Archbold; visiting, Mrs. Fyfe and Mr. J. W. Harding. Mr. Archbold (parents) raised the question of the representation of Manaia parents on the board through the local bodies' representatives, but it was pointed out by Mr. Dash that Manaia was not within the statutory limit of five miles. The provision of a hot water service for the use of boys in the engineering workshop was a subject introduced by Mr. Dash, and on the motion of Dr. Thomson it was decided to refer it to the furniture and equipment committee. Mr. Dash, replying to a query by Mr. W. M. Egglestone, said that delay in the construction of the assembly hall had been caused by the lack of necessary reinforcing material. He did not think that the annual breaking-up ceremony could possibly be held in the hall at the end of the year.
