UNSATISFACTORY RACE
TETRATINA'S SPEED
Though the Debutante Stakes at the Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting at Awapuni on Saturday produced an jnteresting contest, it was far from being a satisfactory test and the form shown may not work out during the next few weeks. The Awapuni course was not laid out for four-furlong events and in consequence the barrier post for finis event was far too close to the turn for such a large field. One of those drawn close in had only to jump out smartly to be able to possess a royal chance. This proved to be the case. V. Dye hopped Tetratina out well and she was clear racing out of the back and into the straight. She was still full of running and, showing no , signs of weakening, the task of her pur- , suers was hopeless. She went on to win , as she liked by two and a half lengths. | It was probably the easiest win for years in this event, the pleasing feature fceing that Tetratina did not have to be ridden out to win. She was going very comfortably all the way up the straight. She is a little on the small side, but there is no question about her speed. She may not reach top class, but is likely to win more races. Tetratina is the first to race of the stock of the Tetratema horse Theio and her success will prove a good advertisement for him. Her dam, Squeeze, is a sister to that great mare Cuddle, being out of the Martian mare Caress. This is stout blood and Tetratina may be seen to advantage over a distance of ground next season. In the Minor Places. Greek Step and Columbo Bay, who filled the minor. places, followed Tetratina into the straight, where Columbo Bay was in front of Greek Step. The pair were all out over the last furlong and Greek Step . stayed on the better to beat her rival by a length and a half. She finished solidly but had no chance of catching Tetratina. She is a bay filly by the Australian bred The Greek from the Weathervane mare Weatherstep. Columbo Bay, who is by Phaleron Bay from Columbo, had every chance, but was not good enough. Golden Moon's Showing.
The fourth was Golden Moon, a fine big filly by Tiderace. She was not as forward as the first three, but created a good impression. She is a long strider who will probably be better suited ,by a firm track. Flying Spray, by Phaleron Bay from the Nightraid mare Sea Scout, made a promising showing to finish fifth. Like Columbo Bay, she is trained by George New at Awapuni, but was not as forward as her stable mate. Likely Improvers. Over the last furlong Royce and Pay Roll were putting in some good work on the outside in the straight. Royce created a good impression as one who is likely to improve considerably in the near future. He is a commanding looking colt by Vaals from Limeen by Limond. He was slow to move on Saturday, but was making up his ground at the right end. Pay Roll is a neat filly by Croupier from Zarisee. She was the actual favourite in spite of being drawn wide out. She did not jump out cleanly and was soon in a hopeless position. Nevertheless, her good finish showed she possesses plenty of speed. •
