Death on Active Service. Advice has been received at New Ply- . mouth of the death on active service in England of Sapper O. J. Jans, member of a well known Taranaki family. Stratford Woman Dead. The death of Mrs. Isabella W. McAllister, who celebrated her 99th year on May 11 last and had lived at Stratford for 25 years, occurred yesterday. Hawera Borough Estimates. Provision for the expenditure of £33,513 is made in the estimates approved for 1940-41 by the Hawera Borough Council. Estimated receipts were £37,425. Not the Right Time. In view of the international situation the Patea County Council expressed the view yesterday that the time was not opportune to consider holding Taranaki centennial celebrations. Unceasing Rain. Rain has fallen on every day of the preeent month so far at Stratford, according to the records of the official recorder for the Department of Industrial and Scientific Research. Afforestation Urged. Afforestation as a desirable work for the period of general demobilisation is advocated by the Kaponga branch of the Farmers' Union, which considers vast unproductive areas should be planted. Rescission Motiori Lost. A motion for the rescission of a grant from the Patea County Council to the Patea branch of the Plunket Society on the ground that the society had misled the council about the state of its funds was defeated at a meeting of the council. Rural Housing Loans. The next few weeks should see a start made in the Egmont county with the erection of houses under the provisions of the Rural Housing Act, the council having taken steps to raise a loan oi £5000 and having already approved of two applications.
