Rebate on Rates.
The fact that rates totalling £892 have been collected by the 'Inglewood County Council in the first two months this year compared with £2054 for the first two months of last year, a decrease this year of £1162, shows how the granting of a small rebate induces early payment. Last year 2£ per cent. rebate was granted on rates paid during the first 30 days. This year no rebate was granted. "Slow Loading of Cargo." "What is slow loading?" Mr. R. W. Bothamley asked when a letter from the Union Steam Ship Company stating that delay in the shipment of cargo from Auckland to Wellington was partly due to slow loading, was read to the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. Captain S. Holm commented that a walk on the waterfront might supply the information, and Mr. P. E. Pattrick asked if it was a case of "can't or won't?" "I think they have got to the stage where they can't," Captain Holm replied. Town Workers for Harvesfing. A move to assist farmers during harvesting by compiling a register of men , at New Plymouth available on odd days for this work was made at last night's I meeting of the North Taranaki Council of Primary Production. The thought of the council was that if a register was opened men such as railway workers who oftcn had a spare day at changes of shifts and others who were not in regular employment or could spare week-ends could indicate which days they might be able to work on farms. While men were wanted to volunteer for harvest work,. 'their services, of course, would be paid for by the farmer. Messrs. D. Le C. Morgan and W. P. Nichol were deputed to study the position and if advisable open a register
