WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Ohawe: Mrs. Winters presided at the September meeting. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs. Squire in the serious illness of Mrs. Squire snr. Several donations from members were received for soldiers' parcels. Delegates were chosen to attend the half-yearly council meeting. Mrs. Duckworth judged points competitions, which resulted: Best sponge, Mrs. Alexander 1, Mrs. Squire 2; best bloom, Mrs. Squire 1, Mrs. Winters 2. A time limit competition was won by Mrs. Taylor. Hostesses were Mesdames Hickey and Hunwick. Huirangi: At the monthly meeting Mrs. Pearse presided over a good attendance | and Mrs. Chatterton was welcomed as a j new member. In view of the decision to forego the annual birthday, being the birthday month, the afternoon was spent socially. Two pencil and paper competitions were won by Mrs. H. Mace, Mrs. Honnor winning a third. Several mem--bers gave a variety of items. Mrs. Keat, j former president of the institute, was presented with a small gift as thanks for j the good services she had given the in- | stitute. Mrs. Keat gave a small birthday , cake in place of the usual one. A best bloom competition was won by Mrs. Osborne, Mrs. Mace being second. Riverlea: Mrs. Hughes presided over the monthly meeting. It "was decided to increase soldiers' parcels this month to four. A bring and buy stall in aid of funds for work among the lepers was arranged. A mock election in which the | two candidates were Mrs. J. Gibson and Mrs. J. J. Malone, resulted in the return of the former. A competition for the best bowl of spring flowers was won by Miss Southern, with Mrs. J. Gibson and Mrs. N. Hudson equal second. A competition for gingernuts was won by Miss P. Hargreaves. A compettiion was won by Mrs. Mills and a travelling shilling by Mrs. Hughes. Hostesses were Mrs. Southern and Miss P. Hargreaves. Tikorangi: Mrs. D. Botham presided at the September meeting. Mrs. Johnston j gave a demonstration on the icing of a Christmas cake. Two new members were welcomed. The home competition for the best article made from a 251b bag of flour was won by Mrs. Johnston. It was decided to give £1 to the North Taranaki Women's Institute Spitfire fund. The best bloom of the month for the Foreman Cup was shown by Mrs. O. Hicks. Hostesses were Mrs. O. Hicks and Miss A. Honeyfield. Frankley: Mrs. Whittaker presided, a good number of members and friends being present. One new member was welcomed. Correspondence was received from the district federation regarding the forthcoming council meeting, and asking members to consider a united effort by North Taranaki institute members for the Spitfire fund. It was decided to support the effort, and a donation will be sent. Arrangements for the annual flower show were completed, all proceeds to be for the Frankley institute war effort. A , card party will be held at the home of Mrs. Lister for the same purpose. Mrs. Horton. New Plymouth, demonstrated the making of Victorian posies and Victorian floral ladies. A display of Egyptian ware was shown by Mrs. H. H. Wood, who had received it from her son, who is serving overseas. It was decided to send parcels and letters to boys who had left the Frankley district for overseas servicc. A competition for a date and nut loaf rcsulter: Mrs. Ncighbour 1, Mrs. Ijjo-ht 2. Mrs. Gilbert 3; best bloom, Mrs. Goodacre 1, Mrs. L. Srnith 2, Mrs. Allen 3 A competition far hand-knitted socks was won by Mr. L. Smith jnr., and a competition for one pound of tea by Mrs. W. Dean. It was reported that members had knitted a large number of mittens. balaclavas and scarves for soldiers and sailors. and that work was still in progress. The sining circle had entertained at the New Plymouth centre and the old people's home.
