Christchurch is to be the first city in New Zealand with a nursery school. a grant for the establishment of which has been made by the New Education Fellowship. Shepherd Drowned at Ford. A young shepherd was swept from his horse and drowned when he attempted to ford a flooded creek in the Waipawa district on Sunday, his body being recovered yesterday. Amended Ballot Procedure. Amended procedure for ballots to fill the territorial forces has been announced by the Minister of Natipnal Service. Power is given for the Minister to use men for some forms of honorary service. Hit and Run Drivers. The Minister Of Transport referred yesterday in scathing, terms to hit and run drivers, his remarks having the more point in that they referred to four cases which had occurred in New Zealand in the past month. Men Without Employment. Men who have given up their civilian employment in anticipation of being called up for service with the 4th reinforcements and who now cannot find suitable employment will be paid_ military wages on bringing their situation to the notice of the defence authorities, according to the Minister of Defence,
