NO SINGLE WORKERS
need for farm labour "It appears that farmers needing labour are relying on single men and have not realised that practically none are available," stated a letter read at last night's meeting of the North Taranaki Council of Primary Production from the national council. The letter goes on to say "it must be made clear that the great majority o! farmers have no hope at al lof securing single men, though there is a reasonable chance of obtaining married men." Dealing further with the question of farm labour, the letter stated that public works quarters acquired by farmers could not be built quickly enough for immediate requirements. Under these circumstances the Government had decided to increase the separation allowance from 12s 6d to £1 a week in cases where a married man was obliged to live away from his family to work on a farm. The necessity for farmers needing assistance to apply through the placement service was stressed. This was an essential step and an active campaign would have to be mstituted by district councils to meet the serious position that would arise if farmers did not accept married workers.
