WIN FOR PETERS
NEW PLYMOUTH CYCLING I. Peters secured 'first and fastest time in the New Plymoilth Amateur Cycle Club's 50-mile open road race from New Plymouth to Stratford and, back on Saturday. Peters was also successful in breaking last- year's record time by nearly three minutes. Results were: I. Peters (handicap 4fm.) 1, K. Stevens (4|m) 2, K. Lewis (4|m) 3, E. Scott. (6m) 4, J. Cox (4fm) 5, G. Bowen (6m) 6, A. Allen (5Jm) 7. Fastest time: I. Peters, 2h 21m 49 2-5s, At Inglewood Batten was the , first to turn, followed shortly after by Webb, Cameron and Little. Clinton turned shortly afterwards, approxixnately 400 yards ahead of tlie 9m and 101m group. Klenner was riding very well at this stage, with the other groups close behind. Webb broke away shortly after to establish a lead of 200 yards at Tariki, but was caught before Stratford by the bunched field. At the turn a group of 22 riders, headed by Allen and Cameron, were together and Donovan, the only scratch man left in the race', turned five minutes later, accompanied by Pidwell and Foley. , The 4|m group were 15 seconds ahead of Donovan for time at this gtage, A good pace was kept on for the run home and except for stragglers, the positions did not change appreciably. Lewis was the first rider to turn on to the racecourse, approximately 50 yards ahead of the next rider, but had the misfortune to skid and hit a post, thus losing his advantage. Out of a group of 16 riders, Stevens was the first to show out in a long sprint, but Peters took command some 50 yards off the post to win by a wheel and also gain fastest time. Stevens, in second position, finished for second fastest time some 20 yards ahead of Lewis in third position, with the rest of the bunch close up. The scratch rider, Donovan, having ridden practically unassisted from the turn, finished five minutes later to gain | fourth fastest time, only 10 seconds '-vwer than that of the winner.
