HIGHWAYS GRANTS
INGLEWOOD COUNTY WORK Applications by the Inglewood County Council for inclusion on the main highways estimates of £8380, comprising £6909 for improvements and construction and £1471 for maintenance. have been approved in full by the Main Highways Board, it was reported at the meeting of the council yesterday. The figures pould be acted upon in anticipation of the appropriations and proposals submitted, stated Mr. F. W. Lindup, Main Highways Board representative, in notifying that the sums had been tentatively approved, all on a £3 for £1 basis, as follows:— Improvement and construction, Ingle-wood-Purangi highway, Durham Road, Manganui bridge £570, Tariki RoadAutawa Road £1800, Burkhardt's devjation £825, Egmont highway, surfacing deviation £130, reconstruction and sealing £2960, Inglewood-Everett highway, reconstruction and sealing £354, and Lepperton Junction-Inglewood highway, widening and repairs to culvert £270. Maintenance: Inglewood-Purangi £1200, Egmont Road £75, Inglewood-Everett £91, and Lepperton Junction-Inglewood £105. Additional monetary authority for £488 on a £3 for £1 subsidy basis for the completion of sealing work on the Egmont highway to the radius line was also received from the Main Highways Board. Engineer's Report. Reconstruction work on the Junction East highway, stripping and the erection of a screening plant at the Autawa pit, attention to the Norfolk east and west roads, and general maintenance formed the principal works to be done in the county during the present month, it was reported by the engineer, Mr. J. G. McIvor. Reporting on the main highways, the engineer stated that formation work at Burkhart's deviation on the InglewoodPurangi main highway was nearing completion and base course metalling had been started. Formation work had been resumed near Tarata and ah underslip. on Tarata zig-zag had been c'ribbed and filled. The contractor was trimming the regraded section of the InglewoodEverett highway ready for handing over. Dombroski's . bridge in the west riding had been opened to traffic. A culvert at Middlemiss' on Mangaone Road had been replaced with larger pipes. and the outlet piped across the paddock. On Autawa and Pita roads metal had been spread on the approaches at the new bridges. Extensive quarrying had been done at the Ngatoro pit to supply metal for Burkhart's deviation. Proposals for King Road were in hand. Parking on Sale Days. Little trouble was experienced with the parking of cars on sale days, but with a view to improving visibility the traffic inspector (Mr. C. E. Varcoe) recommended that "no parking" signs be placed prohibiting parking within 30 feet of the bend on both sides of Junction Road. He had issued (31 warnings and had weighed five heavy motor vehicles. Six motorists had been tested for their driver's licenses, one having failed, and two breaches of traffic legislation had been reported to the head office, it was stated by the inspector, Mr. A. G. Jenkins. One pony had been impounded and two horses had been seized. Mr. J. Shepherd, Tariki Road, was granted permission to move his roadside fence towards the road about four feet to enable him to cope with weed growth.
