MAIL AT FITZROY

POSITION EXPLAINED Following resolutions passed by the Fitzroy branch of the Labour party and supported by the Tramways Union, Mr. F. L. Frost, M.P.„ recently made representations to the chief postmaster, Mr. D. R; McCowatt, at New Plymouth pointing out the inconvenience caused to hundreds of suburban citizens through the curtailment of postage facilities. _ In the past, Fitzroy had enjoyed collections at 11 a.m., 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., but the latter two collections had been eliminated. Mr. McCowatt's reply followed on the lines of the explanation already given to the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce. The. altered clearing times and the discontinuation of night clearances, he wrote, did not apply only to New Plymouth, but were general throughout the Dominion owing to the necessity of conserving petrol and manpower. As far as the Fitzroy post office was concerned the clearing time of 4 p.m. was fixed in order that connection might be made with the outgoing mail that closed at the chief post office at 4.30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It was regretted that the 10 p.m. clearance could not be reinstated, but arrangements were in progress for the majority of boxes to be cleared in the afternoon as well as morning clearance.
