GOLFING CHAMPIONSHIP
PLAY AT WAIWAKAIHO LINKS THE SEMI-FINAL STAGE REACHED. RESULTS OF YESTERDAY’S GAMES. The rain overnight had made the course considerably slower for the second day of the New Plymouth Golf Club’s Easter tournament, and though the weather was fine for the commencement. heavy rain began at about eleven o’clock and continued for two hours before clearing off, The gold in the match play was an improvement on Saturday’s piay, and some good golf was witnessed. F. G. Beaven very nearly brought off a surprise and was rather unlucky in not defeating H. P. Dale, his putt for the half and the match at the 18th going into the hole and coming out again. It was a sternly contested mateh all the way. Dale was one up at the turn, 'but Beaven goon took the lead and held it to the last hole. Dale won the 19th with a four to a five.
F. Quin was right on his game against K. Neal, and proved much too good for the younger player, who made frequent mistakes, the game ending on the 13th green.
Stephenson was playing steady golf against Kelly, and was three up at the turn and won the match 5 and 4.
Grey was putting well against McQuade, and though the latter made a great effort coming home the left-hander won 6 and 5.
Dr. Wade played well against Chong, and took the champion to the last green. Stewart and Mackay had a stern struggle, the Eltham player eventually triumphing on the 17th green. Hasell was putting brilliantly against Saunders, and though the latter made a great effort coming home the New Plymouth man held his own to win 2 up. H. Williams sprang a surprise by defeating C. H. Fyfe 2 up and 1 to play after being 3 down at the seventh. Williams was 5 up on bogie coming in. The second round in the afternoon saw some etern struggles, two out of the four matches going to the last green. DALE DEFEATS QUIN. Dale. won the first hole with a four against Quin, but the latter evened things up by brilliantly negotiating a stymie and winning the second. The third was halved in fine fours, but Dale assumed the lead again by dint of a fine two at the short fourth. ,He looked sure to win the fifth but completely duffed his approach and the hole Was halved in perfect fives. Both were short at the seventh, but Dale holed a long putt for a win. The eighth and ninth were halved in fives. Quin won the 10th, but stymied himself at the 11th and lost 4 to 5. Quin won Moses with a two, but duffed his approach at the 13th and Dale won the hole 4 to 5. Dale also won the 14th and was then 3 up with 4 to play. The 15th and 16th were halved, leaving Dale a winner 3 up and 2 to play. In the Stephenson v. Grey match the first four holes were halved and then the former took the lead by holing Ids approach at the fifth for a four. The sixth was halved and then Grey squared the match by winning the seventh. Stephenson won the eighth and ninth and was two up at the turn. The 10th was halved. Grey put a ball out of bounds at the Uth, but his opponent took three putts and the thole was halved. Grey lost his 'ball at the 12th and was three down. Stephenson put a ball out of bounds at the 13 th and Grey reduced the lead. The 14th was halved in fours, but a great four at the IS th saw Grey only one down. The 16th was halved in threes and, Stephenson tailing three putts at the 17th, the game was square. At the last hole Stephenson was on the edge and Grey about 15 feet from the pin with their thirds. The former sensationally holed his putt and Grey just failed w i hh s l,eit cmfwyp emfwypp failed with his, leaving the younger player a winner. Going out, G. M. Chong and A. A. Stewart both played good golf. Chong won the first. The next three were halved and Stewart won the fifth. The sixth was halved and Chong won the seventh, but lost the eighth. The ninth was halved, leaving the game all square at th© turn. Chong etarted to come in in great style. He won the lOth and 12th with threes, but missed a nineineher for a four and a win at the 13th. Stewart won the 14th with a three and the fifteenth with a five and squared the game again. The 16th was halved in threes and the 17th in fours. Stewart put his tee shot out of bounds at the last hole. Chong reached the green with his third and Stewart with his fourth. Both balls were touching. They tossed and Chong putted and stymied his opponent and won 1 up. The Hasell v. Williams game needs little description, Hasell being much too good. He was 7 up at the turn and won 7 up and 5 to play. The results are: —■
