HAWERA TROTTING MEETING

ANOTHER GOOD DAY’S RACING

BIG FIELDS AND ( LOSE FINISHES

WAIMATE HANDICAP TO TAIPARE

The Hawera Trotting Club’s annual meeting was brought to a successful conclusion yesterday, when there was again a large attendance and the totalisator investments were well up to the average. Racing was again very interesting, the fields being large and Ute finishes close. The principal event, the Waimate Handicap, attracted a field of sixteen, the winner being the Northerner Taipare, with the Cup winner Gold Jacket as runner-up.

VISITING HOUSES' SUCCESS TWO FIRST FAVOURITES SCORE. A SPLENDID DAY’S RACING. The club has every reason to congratulate itself upon the success of the meeting, for it is doubtful if two better days’ sport with light harness horses have ever been witnessed in Taranaki. Despite the threatening weather there ■was again a large attendance at the Egmont Racing Club’s course yesterday, (the gate takings being almost on a par with last year, and it is certain from the eulogistic remarks passed ou the racing that the meeting has given trotting a great fillip in the district. Racing was of a very interesting character throughout. (Fields were large, the despatches by Mr. A. Morse were good, end the handicapper (Mr. G. Paul, jun.), trad again done his work so thoroughly that finishes were very close. Despite this, however, the honorary judge (Mr. J. Gray) again hoisted the numbers promptly and correctly. So well had the handicapper done his "work that even with Saturday’s' form to guide them, the public were well astray, only two first favourites paying first dividends. A feature was the success of outside horses,- no less than Beven of the races going to horses from cutside Taranaki—three to Auckland, one to Hawke’s Bay, two to Manawatu end one to the Nelson district. The only Taranaki-owned horse to win was JMalone’s Real Todd. The Waimate Handicap attracted a field of 16, and after a splendid race was won by the Auckland-owned Taipare, by half a length from the Cup winner, another Aucklander, Gold Jacket. The honours, indeed, lay with the latter, for after putting up a record in the cup by running the two miles in 4min 35 3-osec on Saturday, he clipped Six seconds off that time yesterday and put up a record for the track. Taipare, however, was responsible for a very creditable performance, as it was his first appearance over the distance, and he was allowed to pay a substantial dividend. Times were fast as the result of the attention given to the track by the custodian, Mr. A. Morse. The rain of the previous night had done no harm, but had freshened up the track somewhat.

The stipendiary steward, Mr. Reid, was again present, but found nothing to quibble at. Everything went off without a hitch, though owing to the size of the fields there was a little delay, the last race being half an hour behind time. The totalisator staff, under Mr. W. O’Callaghan, had a busy time, the machine handling £19,270, as compared with • £20,028 10s for the second day last year, a decrease of £758 10s for the day, making a total of £37,272 for the kneeling, as compared with £37,760 last year, a decrease of £4BB. The Hawera Municipal Band, under Lieut. H. C. A. Fox, rendered an enjoyable programme of musie. As on the first day, the secretary, Mr. E. P. Cox, and bis staff, had everything right up to the moment. NOTES ON THE TROTTING. FAVOURITES FIGHT OUT FINISH. Single Mint was the only withdrawal from the Trial Handicap, in which there was a field of fourteen. Beverley Audubon was sent out favourite, carrying _ 701 tickets more than Nelson Dillon, which carried considerably more than Trustworthy. Great Bakin was the only other seriously backed, and these four filled the places. Lord Lou was the quickest to find iris feet, but once settled down the favourite went to the front and at the end of half a mile was leading by six lengths from Musical hud Nel-son Dillon, who had -made up a lot of ground. Turning into the back JJeverley Audubon lifted and Nelson Dillon drew to within two lengths of the favourite. Along the back Beverley ’Audubon and Nelson Dillon were out in front, well clear of Musical and Trustworthy and a strung out field. It was Boon apparent that the leading pair had the race to themselves. The favourite led into the straight, but once headed for home Nelson Dillon drew away to win comfortably by four lengths. Trustworthy ran into third place half a mile from home and. staving off a strong challenge from Great Ba Ilin, qair.cd third place by a bare half-length, the pair being ten lengths back. Then came Itichgnond Loss and Lord Lou. OHAWE HANDICAP TO REAL TODD.

The nine carded faced the starter in the Ohawe Handicap. Call Boy was ■made a strong favourite, carrying nearly twice as much as Lady.Ena, the next in demand, with plenty of support for Rebecca and Etta Cole. A good start v w effected, though Real Todd was slow to settle down. Nelson’s Request was momentarily prominent, but once into stride T-'i Bells took command from 'iz— —a /-■«.' * Ena. Call

Boy quickly made up his handicap and, passing the stand was lying handy to Tui Bells and Colonel Thorpe, who were together in the lead, and Lady Ena, with Rebecca close up and. Etta Cole coming fast. Entering the back Call Boy and Tui Bells were on terms in the lead from Lady Ena. Real Todd and Rebecca. Along the back Call Boy still held command from Tui Bells, with Lady Ena and Real Todd together next and Rebecca handy. Call Boy was still in front crossing the top from Real Todd, with the other three ou terms next. Call Boy was first to turn for home from Rebecca and Real Todd, who was followed by Tui Bells and Lady Ena, with Etta Cole next. TAIPARE CAUSES SURPRISE. The sixteen carded parted in the big race, the Waimate Plains Handicap, in which the public again sent Great Peter out a warm order, carrying 2911 more tickets than Gold Dial, which was a little better supported than the Shadowland —Pageant- bracket. Tui Wildwood was also well supported. Tui 'Wildwood, Royal Serene and Gold Dial were slow to leave the mark. High Sea was quickly into his stride and led out of the straight from Peter Grattan, Pageant, Taipare, Tamerlane, Ricardo and Vesuvius. At the half-mile High Sea was well clear of Peter Grattan, Pageant, Taipare and Tamerlane, with Royal Ser'ene and Tui Wildwood well back last. Along the back the field closed up. the favourite being well back on the rails. At the end of the first mile High Sea and Peter Grattan were the leaders from Taipare and Pageant, followed by Tamerlane, who was moving up fast, Shadowland. Lady Joan, Vesuvius, Okoura. Great Peter, Gold ■ Dial and Ricardo. Along the -back High Sea again went to the front from Peter Grattan. Taipare, Tamerlane and Shadowland. Tamerlane moved up and across the top was just clear of High Sea and Taipare. who were followed by Shadowland, Peter Grattan and Pageant, with Gold Jacket moving up fast. Taipare led into the straight from Tamerlane, Gold Jacket and Gold Dial. A stirring finish ensued, Gold Jacket making up ground fast but just failing to reach Taipare by half a length, with Pageant half a length further back. Close up came Tamerlane, followed by Gold Dial, Shadowland, High Sea and Lady Joan.

BEATTY IVINS SADDLE EVENT. The 15 carded were saddled up for the patea Handicap, in which Beverley Audubon and Ce Advanceur divided favouritism, the former winding up 35J tickets better backed. Beatty was best backed of the others. ' When the field was despatched the favourite and Matenga were glow to get away. Queen Betty hit the lead early, but ran off the course at the turn and Blue Pedro made the running past the stand from Muriel Thorpe, Electric Gold, Indicator, Profiteer, Ce Advanceur and Beatty. Indicator took the lead into the back from Electric Gold, Blue Pedro, Muriel Thorpe, Silver Link, Profiteer, Lady Kevin and Ce Advanceur. Across the top Indicator broke, interfering with Electric Gold, and Beatty -went to the front to lead into the straight from Blue Pedro, Andover, Silver Link, Indicator and Queen Betty. Going on Beatty won nicely by four lengths from Andover, which got up to beat Blue Pedro by a bare length for second place. Lady -Brent was fourth, followed by Queen Betty and Matangi. FAVOURITE WINS THE KAPUNI.

' Nelson Dillon and Trustworthy were withdrawn from the Kapuni Handicap, leaving a field of 14. Hal Huon was installed favourite, carrying 21J more tickets than Heroic, with Queen Elizabeth carrying a few less. Our Nancy was best 'backed of the others. Signor and Bell Dial were slow to. strike their gait. Mona Logan was the early leader from Sailor Boy, and the pair led past the stand well clear of Hilltop ami Hal Huon, who had made up a lot of ground. Mona Logan led into the 'back stretch from Sailor Boy and Hilltop, who were on terms from Hal Huon, Our Nancy and Warplane, who were almost in line, anti Wrigley. Mona Logan and Sailor Boy were almost on terms along the back stretch from iiii/top, Our Nancy and Hal Huon, with Heroic moving up fast. Across the top the favourite went to the front and led into the straight from Our Nancy, Sailor Boy, Warplane, Hilltop and Heroic. The favourite won easing up by two lengths from Sailor Boy. which got up to beat the tiring Our Nancy by s ix lengths. Warplane was fourth, followed by Queen Elizabeth, Signor and Heroic. NARROW WIN FOR LOUISIANA. The scratching of Call Boy, Real Todd, Roma Bingen and The Tiger reduced the field in the Optmake Handicap to seven. I'he southern horse, Maxegin, was sent out a hot order, carrying 2801 more tickets than Bright Light, which was better backed than Anseline. Kolmar and Bingen Starr were best backed of the others. Bingen Starr, Kolmar and Louisiana moved away nicely, but Brigand was ’slow to settle down. Bright Light ran to the front entering the back stretch

from Louisiana and Kolmar, with the favourite, who had made up a. lot of ground, fourth. Approaching the top Kolmar had run to second place from Bright Light, with the favourite third, followed by Louisiana and a bunched field. Louisiana broke at the turn and Brigand ran to the front passing the stand at the close of the first mile, being well clear of Bright Light. Maxegin, Louisiana, Kolmar and Anseline. There was little alteration along the back, but with half a mile to go Brigand was well clear of Maxegin, with Bright Light close up and Louisiana handy. Here Brigand was done with and across the top Bright Light and Maxegin were on terms with Louisiana. The last-named then drew up to the leaders and entered the home stretch on terms with Bright Light. Here the favourite was done with and Louisiana drew awav, but over the last hundred yards Anseline came very fast and in a great run just failed to catch Louisiana by a bare neck. Kolmar, a couple of lengths further back. got.up to beat Bright Light by a similar distance. Then followed Brigand. CORA TACKS ALL THE WAY. Trustworthy, Royal Serene and Reremai were withdrawn from the Stewards’ Handicap, leaving a big field of 19. There was no pronounced favourite, but when the machine closed the Pageant-Shadow-land bracket was carrying 594 tickets more than Thorpie, Which was a little better backed than Abrudbanya. Direct Todd, Joy Bird and Dillon Huon were all well supported. When the field was despatched Cora Tacks was quickly into her stride and at once struck the lead from Thorpie, Satinbird .and Beatty. Approaching the back Beatty ran into third place. Across the top Cora Tacks was still in command from Thorpie and Direct Todd, Beatty having dropped back. Cora Tacks -led into the home stretch and went on to win comfortably by four length-3 from Direct Todd, with Audubon Child a length further back. Then followed Sylvie Logan and Abrudbanya. DERBY LYNN WINS AGAIN. Scratchings were heavy in the final event, the Kaponga Handicap, the withdrawal of Dealer, Hostess, Sailor Boy and Gold Jacke leaving nine to face the starter. Derby Lynn was sent out favourite, carrying 92 more tickets -than the southern owned Tumatakuru. There was then a big drop to Lottie Advance, which carried a few tickets more than Heroic. The favourite did not quickly find her feet. Bell Dial led out of the straight from Nellie Parson?, Speed King, Heroic, Tumatakuru and Derby Lynn. Bell Dial was still in command at the end of a mile from Tumatakuru, Heroic, Derby Lynn and Speed King. Along the back there was little alteration save that the favourite was running third on terms with Heroic and Nellie Parsons. Ixittie Advance and Speed King were moving up. The favourite continued to improve her position, and at the turn for home was on terms with Bell Dial in the lead. Once straightened up she hit the front and went on to win nicely by two lengths from Lottie Advance, which finished fa-st a length in front of Speed King. Heroic was close up fourth. Morgan, New Plymouth, at 9.30 p.m. to-morrow (Wednesday). GOOD WORK APPRECIATED. MR. J. CAHILL HONOURED. Well deserved recognition of duty efficiently done was expressed at Hawera yesterday when Mr. J. Cahill, transport officer, was presented with a wallet by the owners and trainers of visiting horses. There is probably no better known or more popular figure in Taranaki racing circles, than Mr. Cahill, who is past master in the art of arranging for transport and attending to the thousand and one details that make all the difference to owners and trainers taking horses to Hawera. Immediately their charges reach, the platform, Mr. Cahill takes charge, superintends the unloading and sees the horses safely and comfortably stabled. After the meeting he sends them away just as cheerily and expeditiously. “A telegram to Jack Cahill and al! will be al’-mled to” is quite a maxim among hoi si -owners and trainers who appreciate to the full all that he does in the interests of racing. It was pleasing to note that during the Hawera trots yesterday visiting owners and trainers assembled at the stewards’ stand when Mr. C. Capamagian (Waikato), in a few well chosen words, voiced their appreciation of all that Mr. Cahill had done, in their interests and in the interests of the sport. He then asked. Mr. Cahill to accept a wallet as a slight token of esteem. This he handed over amidst cheers.

Mr. Cahill, who was completely sur prised at the unexpected gift, briefly re sponded.
