GOLFING CHAMPIONSHIP

EASTER TOURNAMENT QUALIFYING HOUNDS PLAYED. GAME ON WAIWAKAIHO LINKS. Perfect golfing weather favoured the opening of the twenty-third annual Easter tournament of the New Plymouth Golf Club on Saturday. The responsibility of starting the big field of 80 was in the capable hands of Messrs. H. Dempsey and F. L. Sanders, who dispatched the first pair at halfpast eight, the rest following at intervals of four minutes until 11 a.m. Considering the recent long, dry spell, the course was in good order and reflected great credit upon the greenkeeper (Mr. Saunders), his assistant (Mr. Jefferies) and Mr. P. Grey, who was until recently in charge of the course. Nevertheless the fiery state of the greens and the newly cut holes proved the undoing of a great many players, and three putts on a green was a frequent occurrence. C. 11. Fyfe and G. Kelly, who have handicaps of 10 and 11 respectively, sprang a surprise by leading the field with 80’s at the conclusion of the morning round, but Dale 81, Chong 82 and Saunders and Neal 83 were not far away. In the afternoon the two leaders failed to hold their places, though Fyfe's 85 gave him the second position on the list, a very fine performance for a player of his calibre. Dale again returned an 81 and his aggregate of 102 placed him at the top of the list. Chong returned an 84, which placed him in third position, with Grey next. Four players, Dr. Wade, F. G. Bcavan, H. Williams and A. Thorne, tied for the last three places and on the draw the last-named went out and is now in the position of honour in the Waiwakaiho handicap. In this event, also, three players tied for the last place . nd on the play off D. Murtrie (Wanganui) won. The first two rounds of the Taranaki amateur championship and the Waiwakaiho handicap will be played to-day, when some stern struggles should bo witnessed.

The committee, with Mr. G. E. Jago as chairman and Mr. J. H. Boon as hon. secretary, all worked hard to make the day a success, and the arrangement# reflected great credit to their efforts. Following are the qualifiers and their scores:— TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIP.
