The. golf season opened throughout the Dominion on Saturday with all centres holding provincial championships or handicap tournaments. Auckland’s principal event was the opening of the provincial championship tournev at Middlemore. AU the pajjt champions, including Sloan Morpeth, the present New Zealand amateur champion and holder of the provincial title in 1914 and 1915, being in action. The defender of the title was H. B. Lusk, who ‘beat R. D. Wright for it last year. Wright had held the title previously and the other ex-holder was Rex George. As a result of Saturday morning’s play Morpeth and Wright led the field with 73 and 76 respectively. In the afternoon Wright came in the winner with a score of 74 against Morpeth’s 78.
