HAWERA TROTTING MEETING

CLUB HAS BRIGHT OPENING DAY BIG FIELDS AND GOOD RACING GOLD JACKET WINS THE CUP Favoured by fine weather, a large attendance, increased totalisator investments, good fields and interesting racing, the Hawera Trotting Club had a most successful opening day for their annual meeting, which commenced on the Egmont Racing Club’s course on Saturday, and will conclude. The Hawera Trotting Cup attracted a fine field of nineteen, and after a fine race was won on the post by the back marker of the field, the Epsom owned Gold Jacket, with the Christchurch owned Shadowland second.

•NCREASED INVESTMENTS TWO FAVOURITES SUCCEED. DAY OF GOOD DIVIDENDS. The inereasiug popularity of the light harness sport in Taranaki was shown by the large crowd that came by train and ear from all parts of Taranaki and beyond on Saturday to the Egmont racecourse to be present at the opening of the Hawera Trotting Club’s annual meeting. The sport provided will further tend to popularise trotting in Taranaki, for not only were the fields large but the best light harness horses in the North Island and in Canterbury were seen in action. Racing throughout was of a decidedly interesting character. Fields were large and finishes were close, a tribute to the work of the handicapper, Mr. G. Paul jun., who not only had brought the fields together, but had the public well puzzled throughout the day, only one first favourite being first past the post. No matter how close the finishes, the honorary judge, Mr. J. Gray; hoisted the numbers correctly. Mr. A. Morse, in charge of t*,‘ barrier, effected good despatches, though on occasions the mechanism at some of the distances did not work as well as "it should. The principal event, the Hawera Cup, attracted a field of nineteen, and a great race saw Gold Jacket, who was giving away seven seconds, get up to win on the post from Shadowland, with another Auckland horse in Gold Dial third. Visiting horses had a great time, winning five of the eight races, whilst the well-known local owner, Mr. J. R. Corrigan, won two races, and another Hawera owner, Mr. H. V. Ward, won a third race for Hawera.

After the Cup race the president of the club, Mr. B. McCarthy, called on the Hon. 0. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, to present the cup, which he did amidst applause. The totalisator staff, under Mr. O’Callaghan, had a busy day, the machine handling £18,002. as compared with £17,731 10s for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £270 10s.

Mr. R. T. Reid, of Hamilton, the re-cently-appointed stipendiary steward, was present, but found nothing to cavil at. The first race was started promptly to time but, probably owing to the big fields, the last race was about half an hour late, though the officials all worked well.

The course and its appointments were tn splendid order, as the result of the care bestowed on it by Mr. A. Morse during the recent dry spell. The catering, in the hands of A. S. Adams, of Auckland, and the booth, under Mr. Cann, were of a high standard, adding their quota to the day’s enjoyment. The Hawera Municipal Band, under Lieutenant H. C. A. Fox, rendered an enjoyable programme of music. The secretarial department, under the control of Mr. E. P. Cox, was right up to the moment. DETAILS OF THE RAGING. TRUSTWORTHY WINS THE AUROA There were only four withdrawals from the Auroa Handicap, leaving a big field of 20. Speculation was confined to a quintette, and a struggle for favoritism between three of these saw Great Eyre just two tickets better backed than Trustworthy, which was two tickets ahead of Ce Advanceur. Then eame Beverley Audubon a few tickets further back, with Musical the only other supported. A good despatch was effected, blit Indicator quickly broke. Lord Lou was quickest to find his feet from Trustworthy, Great Eyre, Musical, Don Wildman and Lady Jewel. Lord Lou broke and Great Eyre took the lead entering the straight and passed the stand six lengths clear of Lord Lou, with Trustworthy and Lady Jewel together next, followed by Ce Advanceur and Don Wildman. Along the baek. Great Eyre was the leader from Lord Lou, Trustworthy, Ce Advanceur. Muriel Thorpe and Beverley Audubon. Across the top Trustworthy m >ved up to the leaders and entered the straight in the lead from Ce Advanceur and Great Ballan, which had moved up fast, while Great Eyre had dropped back. A splendid run home saw no alteration, the leading two passing the post in the same order separated by half lengths. Then came Beverley Audubon, Richmond Lass, Hill Top, Musical and Muriel Thorpe. The winner, a promising two-year-old is in the New Zealand Derby.

FAVOURITE WINS THE MATAPU. Ben Bingen was the only withdrawal from the Matapu Handicap, in which Nelson’s Request had been omitted from the book, a field of eleven starting. Call Boy was made a good favorite, carrying 63 tickets more than Etta CoL>, the pair carrying the bulk of the investments. Mokanna was the only other seriously considered. A good start saw Colonel Thorpe and Mokanna move away in the lead, but the former broke and Call Boy, making up his handicap, was in the lead at the end of half a mile from Colonel Thorpe, Etta Cole. Mokanna and Rebecca. Entering the back stretch Call Boy was still in the lead from Rebecca and Colonel Thorpe together and this trio held command to the turn, where Colonel Thorpe, who had broken badly, dropped back. Moving nicely, Call Boy maintained the advantage to win by a length from'Rebecca, with Lady Eva two lengths further back, followed by Mokanna and Rea! Todd. THE STRATFORD TO DERBY LYNNSix scratchings reduced the field in the Stratford Handicap to 13. A gooff betting race saw Heroic sent out with 13 tickets more than Hal Huou, with Warplane, Nelson Dillon and Derby Lynn all well supported. When the field was sent away Nelson Dillon and Audubon Child were slow to get away. Mina Logan was quickly into her stride and soon established a good lead from Derby Lynn, Warplane and Profiteer. The order past the stand was Mona Logan, Derby Lynn, Profiteer, Warplane, Thorpie, Our Nancy, Sailor Boy ;rnd Heroic were moving up. Mona Logan was still in command along the back from Derby Logan, with Warplane and Heroic together next and Hal Huon moving up. Mona Logan held command across the top from Derby Lynn, Profiteer, Sailor Boy and Thorpie handy. At the turn the field closed up. Derby Lynn was in front when the field straightened up from Mona Logan, Heroic, Lady Brent, Warplane, Sailor Boy and Our Nancy. Mona Logan here broke and in a gooff finish Derby Lynn threw off a strong challenge by' Heroic to win by a length, whilst Our Nancy, finishing fast, was third six lengths away, just in front of Sailor Boy, Warplane and Hal Huon. Ml ‘

A SURPRISE IN THE CUP, Tui Wildwood and Reremai were the only withdrawals from the Hawera Cup, leaving another big field of 19. Great Peter was made a very hot order, carrying nearly aa much as the bracketed pair, Pageant and Shadowland, and Veuvius combined. Dillon Huon was best backed of tbe others. A good, dispatch saw Pageant, Dillon Huon, Peter Grattan and Kevin Brae quickest to move. Great Peter and Vesuvius being delayed momentarily by the barrier. Shadowland moved up smartly aud at the half mile was running second to Kevin Brae, with Lady Joan, Pageant, Royal Serene, Peter Grattan, Vesuvius and Riearla in that order. With half the journey gone Kevin Brae was still the leader from Lady Joan, Shadowland, Great Peter, Vesuvius, Peter Grattan and Pageant. Going out to the back Vesuvius had run into second berth but broke, interfering with the favorite, and both dropped back. Along the baek l.ady Joan took command from Shadowland, Kevin Brae, Dillon Huon, Pageant, Great Peter, Gold Jacket, Rock Huon and Lord Nepean, who were moving up fast. Across the top Shadowland went to the front from Dillon Huon, Lord Nepean, Lady Joan, Pageant and Gold Jacket, 'rhe last named had moved into third position turning for homo from Shadowland and Dillon Huon and, finishing in splendid style, got up to win by half a length from Shadowland, with Gohl Dial, which eame with a rattle into third place, four lengths away, just in front of Lord Nepean. Pageant and Dillon Huon. The winner [raid a big price considering he won recently at the Thames.

THE TIGER ALL THE WAY. Brian Bingen was the only withdrawal from the Manaia Handicap, in which a field of nine faced the starter. The locally owned The Tiger was made a good favorite, carrying 258 tickets more than Maxegin, which carried 941 tickets more than Louisiania. A good start saw The Tiger quickly into his stride. After half a mile the favorite was several lengths clear of Maxegin. which had made up most of his handicap with Louisiana third and Bingen Starr, which had broken badly; fourth. After a mile The Tiger was. still in the van with Maxegin a couple of lengths away, followed by Louisiana, Kolmar and Anseline. Entering the baek The Tiger was a couple of lengths clear of Maxegin and then after a big gap came Louisiana, just clear of Brigand, Bingen Star and Anseline. The two leaders thereafter had the issue to themselves and a stirring finish saw The Tiger just maintain his advantage to win by a bare neck from Maxegin. Anseline was ten lengths further back, having got up to beat Louisiana for third place. Then camo Kolmar and Bright Light,

JOY BIRD WINS SADDLE EVENT. Van Cap and Maid of the Mountains were the only scratchings in the Normanby Handicap, leaving a good field of 19. A good betting race saw Sylvie Logan end up favorite, carrying 214 tickets more than Gora Tacks, which carried a few more than High Sea. There was good support also for Joy Bird, Direct Todd, Abrudbanya and Lady Brent. The barrier failed to lift, causing momentary delay. Silver Link was quickest to settle down from Profiteer, Cora Tacks, Direct ToddBeatty and Lady Brent. Leaving the straight, Cora Tacks took the lead from Profiteer and Silver Link, with Beatty and Joy Bird handy. Sylvie Logan, which ran wide, and Great Keoni wore last. Cora Tacks led along the baek, but at the three furlongs Joy Bird had run into second place, with Silver Link and Beatty next, followed by Lady Brent, High Sea and Abrudbanya. Silver Link then broke. Joy Bird moved to the front and turned for home just clear of Cora Tacks and Beatty, Abrudbanya joined issue in the run home and. a splendid finish saw Joy Bird gain the verdict by half a length from Abrudbanya, which got up to beat Beatty by a neek. Four lengths further hack came Silver Link, High Seas, Cora Tacks and Lady Brent in a bunch. ANOTHER FAVORITE BEATEN.

Richmond Lass, Signor and Heroic wore taken out from the President’s Handicap, leaving a field of 11. The public went solidly for the southern horse, Tamatakuru, which carried nearly three times as much as Dealer, the next in demand, with good support for Cornelia, Kevin Brae, Hostess, Speed King, Nelie Parson aud Dad’s Hope. Hostess and Nellie Parsons were slow to get going, Dealer, Bell Dial, Great Delight and Tamatakuru led out of the straight, but along the baek Great Delight ran to the front from Bell Dial, Tamatakuru, The Dealer and Kevin Brae. Tamatakuru took the lead across the top from The Dealer and Kevin Rrae and led past the stand the first time round from The Dealer, Bell Dial, Lottie Advance, Great Delight, Cornelia and Kevin Brae. There as little alteration along the baek, save that the field had closed up. Half a mile from home the favorite still command from The Dealer, Lottie Advance, Bell Dial, Kevin Brae and Speed King. At the turn Lottie Advance had run into second place and in the run home drew away to win from the favorite by one and a half lengths, with Bell Dial two lengths away third. Kevin Brae was fourth followed by Speed King and Hostess. The winner paid a great price considering that. she had run second in the Wanganui Cup last week. SISTER BEATRICE WINS WELL. A big field of eighteen was harnessed up for the Eltham Handicap, of one and a quarter miles. A good betting race saw Pageant sent out favorite, carrying 104 more tickets than Reremai, the next in demand, with Vesuvius and Tamerlane carrying a few tickets less. Direct Todd was best backed of the others. A good start saw Hohora in the lead from High Sea, Pageant, Admiral Lock and Direct Todd. Entering the back Hohora was still in the lead from Pageant, High Sea, Direct Todd. Admiral Lock, Reremai and Our Patch. Along the back Hohora was still the leader from High Sea, Pageant, Hohora, Direct Todd, Councillor and Admiral Lock. Crossing the top Reremai ran to the front and led to the straight entrance from Hohora, Pageant and High Sea, with Sister Beatrice coming on the outer. With a well sustained run the Hawera inare took command half way down the home stretch to win by one and a half lengths from High Sea, which was a similar distance in front of Hohora. Pageant was close up fourth and was followed by Reremai and Admiral Lock, SECOND DAY’S ACCEPTANCES. Acceptances for the second day of the Hawera trotting meeting are: —:
