AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY
MEETING OF GENERAL COMMITTEE ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE SHOW. A meeting of the general committee of the Taranaki Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held yesterday. Mr. H. C. Sampson (president) occupied the ebn-'r. There were also present: Messrs J. H. Allen, J. M. Smith, A. R. Gudopp, W. B. Grant, R. W. D. Robertson, J. Brown, T. Wilson, A. Turnbull, P. McCabe, A. P. Lister, H. Ward, W. K. Morris, J. T. Goodrick, F. S. Warnham, A. T. Moore, P. J. Petersen, L. G. Andrews, E. Griffiths and H. Stonex. The president reported that satisfactory arrangements were ‘being made with the Minister of Lands for the lease of the Katere block for experimental purposes. Steps would immediately be taken to plough a certain area of the land for the growing of feed for stock at the forthcoming show. The matter of suitably fencing the section was left in the hands of the grounds committee. Messrs J. P. Hintz, H. J. Grayson', W. Ogle and C. Meuli were elected members of the society. The East End Reserve Committee is to be informed that the society cannot see its way to depart from the scale of charges fixed for functions held in the Winter Show buildings. On the recommendation of the poultry committee it was resolved to increase the poultry committee to 16 members and Mr. J. N. Eva was appointed one of the society’s representatives on that committee. It was decided to hold the Winter Show on June 7,8, 9 and 10. Messrs Washer and Swanson were appointed a sub-committec to make inquiries regarding the possibility of arranging a representative football match tc be played during the next Winter Show week.
THE STOCK SHOW. It was resolved that the president and secretary interview the local stationmaster and ascertain what special train arrangements are being made in connection with the Duke of York’s visit to New Plymouth, and that an endeavour be made to have the return of trains so timed as to afford visitors to the town an opportunity of visiting the show, people’s day of which falls on the day of the Duke’s visit. The New Plymouth brass bands are to be invited to quote prices for playing at the show on people’s day. It was left in the hands of Mr. R. W. D. Robertson to interview the local pipe band, with a view’ to enlisting their services also. Discussion took place with reference to ring attractions, and the idea of staging some form of entertainment in addition to the usual ring competitions. As a result a committee consisting of the chairman, Messrs Grant, Stonex and Barnham was appointed to go into the question. Messrs H. Ashton, P. E. Stainton, J. .Toll and J. Cliff will be asked to co-operate with the committee with the object of introducing a number of motor-car events. It was resolved to'ask Mr. L. A. Nolan to marshal, the grand parade, and a subcommittee, consisting of Messrs Sampson, Grant and Griffiths was set up to confer with the marshal in arranging the parade. It was resolved that any breed society wishing to hold a demonstration at the show must first notify the committee, who will arrange the time and place of such demonstrations. It was decided that disc badges should be used to distinguish members at the forthcoming show. It was resolved that a weight-guess-ing competition be held at the show, the weight of three sheep in a pen to be judged. The first prize is to be a 'lady’s or gent’s wristlet watch at the option of the winner. The secretary was appointed to approach Mr. F. J. Hill with reference to controlling the gates. It was resolved that the tramways manager be interviewed with reference to transporting the public from the Fitzroy terminus of the tramline to the showgrounds on people’s day.
