REVOLTING MURDER
YOUNG GIRL'S BODY FOUND ASSAILANT ATTEMPTS SUICIDE. CONFESSION MADE TO POLICE. By Telegraph—P-css Assn.—Copyright. Received Dec. 3, 9.55 p.m. * Melbourne, Dee. 3. The mutilated body of Emma Hill, aged. 17, was found by the police on the bank of the river Yarra. The discovery was made as the result of the statements of George Devitt, aged 27, who in the early hours of the morning hailed a taxicab and told the driver he wanted to be driven to the police station. Devitt’s throat was cut and he was covered in blood. When he arrived at the station he told the police he had left a girl dead near the river after cutting her throat and then cutting his own. After several hours’ search, the police found the girl’s body. There were evi’ences of a desperate struggle, and an examination revealed that even after the girl’s throat had been hacked she had been subjected to outrageous treatment. The girl had been in the habit of going out with Devitt, but had lately tola him she did not want to go again with him. After this repulse, Devitt (who is in hospital and guarded by the police) became moody and wrote to the girl arranging a meeting for last night.
