THE FEILDING MEETING. (Notes by “Moturoa.”) Fifteen Taranaki trainers took S 3 horses to Feilding, and, of these big contingents, all trainers were represented, and 32 horses started. Twenty-seven ran on the first day, but the only place money secured was by Lady Bentinek and Seastar, both of which ran thirds, a* « • « On the second day there was a very different story to tell, 18 horses starting, and their tally was 5 wins, a second and a third. Eka, Silvemine, Sovena, Lady Anstruther and Monaghan secured first money; Resinous second: and Bonogne third, • • « # Eka (Acre —-Park Tide) started the “welter” by scrambling home in front of another outsider in the Novice Stakes on Wednesday, and the dividend was a beauty. She was entrusted with only 22 tickets in the Trial on the first day, but in a weaker field the second day carried £69. st * * # Another fine dividend was attached to the handsome victory of Silvermine (Catmint —Silver Link) in the Oroua Nursery Handicap, and a brilliant career may be safely forecasted for Mr. Alexander’s speedy colt. • * * * # Sovena was just favourite in a good betting race, the Nikau Hack Handicap, and L. A, Pine got her away with the first bunch, and just won after a great tussle with Merle in the straight. * » « • Lady Anstruther and Resinous had the finish of the Rongotea Hack Handicap to themselves, Resinous looking a winner at the home turn, only to be narrowly beaten in the run home by Mr. A. Laing’s game mare. The rest were “distanced.” * « * • Monaghan and Alaric were best backed in the Empire Handicap, and the former, who had a bad spin the first day, left his opponents early in the piece, and, clearing right out in the straight, won by over fifty yards! It was the easiest win at the meeting, and, coming on top of a victory with 61bs. overweight at Aslihurst, gave the Bisogne— Kathleen Mavqurneen gelding an awful showing un. He will tackle open company in future. a « ♦ * Roman declined to jump on the first day, but Alan McDonald got him round on Wednesday. MY. H. Spratt was so disgusted with the gelding’s performance that he quitted him to Mr. W. Bailey, of Palmerston North, for —it is said—£2o. «■ » * * The outstanding disappointments at the meeting were Euphonium, Glengaiiff, Lady Cavendish, Merry Jest, Jazz Baby and The Lamb. From sticky going on the first day, the course grew into a quagmire on Wednesday, so excuses may be made for most of the above failures, and their running may not be taken too seriously. «< * . • The withdrawal of Enare made the Cheltenham Hurdles a gift to Koauau on Thursday, the opposition being of the poorest possible quality. Harry Burt rode a confident race on the oddson favourite, giving the field a big start, but Koauau rolled into his job over the last six furlongs and won in a jog. It was an easy way of winning £175, but there might have been a different tale to tell if O. Cox had elected to start Enare. * * # e After the fine field which contested the hurdle race on the first day, it was queer to see such horses as Nukumai, Enare, Cara wook, Comedy Prince, Sot-
tano, Little River and Gauntlet scratched for the second day’s jumping event. It was rumoured that Koauau would not have been paid up for but for the fact that his trainer, Jack Hastie, heard that practically all the cracks were not starting. So Koauau was accepted for—with happy result. * * * » A drop in totalisator turnover was quite anticipated at Feilding, money lx - ing very “tight” in country districts at present owing to the low prices ruling for butter and cheese, and shearing ©portions being delayed through rain. The wretched weather, particularly on the second day, completed the debacle. It was unfortunate for the Fcildinv Jockey Club, as quantity and. quality were notable features of the acceptance lists, and a better meeting should have resulted. • * » * At the conclusion of the meeting tha race track at Feilding would have given the most optimistic caretaker the blues and it is hard to see how the course can be got ready for the Marton meeting on January 1 and 3. The Feilding course has had a terrible gruelling during the last fifteen months, meetings being" held there by Feilding, Marton and Manawatu (Hunt) clubs—mostly in wet weather, too! * • * * L. G. Morris and A. MeCormac, with three firsts each, shared riding honours at Feilding. Others to ride a winner were L Tilson, P. Burgess, C. Me Govern, B. H. Morris, J. Potter, R. J. Mackie, H. Burt, L. A. Pine, S. Anderson and C. France. * * • «
