For the first time since the Sheffield Shield competition was instituted Queensland is participating, and commenced a match against New: South Wales in fine but dull weather, and on a good wicket. New South Wales batted first and made 280 (Phillips 30, Kippax 127, Scanes 38). Bowling, Mayes took four wickets for 52 and G. Oxenham four for 56. Queensland have lost three wickets for 57 runs (Oxe-nham 34). For New South Wales Kippax batted brilliantly. He gave a polished exhibition scoring freely all round the wicket and never appeared to be troubled by the bowling which had the remainder of the team in tlifficullies.
