STORY IN PICTURES

POLLY, PETER AND WALLABY

You will remember that Richard dropped the treasure clue into the hands of Pedro and Poppy last week. Well, that same night, much to the astonishment of Mr. Moon, they proceeded to the spot where the supposed treasure was hidden, and, after burying a mysterious package, they dived, with many chuckles, into the bushes near buy.

At the very moment that the three chums were burying the mysterious package Pedro and Poppy slunk furtively round the wall of their dwelling. Pedro carried a pick and shovel, so you can guess they were bent on digging up the treasure. They were so full of greediness that they were terribly afraid of being followed. There’s nobody about,” said Poppy. "Good!” growled Pedro. “Come on!” j ? -

Pedro and Poppy were so much afraid that someone might get the treasure before them that they ran nearly all the way to the place where it was buried. “This must be the spot,” said Pedro, examining the plan carefully. “It says ‘Just behind the milestone. Dig deep, and the treasure is yours.’ .We’ll soon get that treasure!” he growled.

Pedro set to work with a will, encouraged by Poppy, who sat on the milestone quivering with excitement, and the thought of the good things they would be able to buy with their wealth. Fearful all the time that someone might come along and want to share the treasure, Pedro worked with all his strength, until he felt ready to drop.

Pedro at last struck the box with his pick. But it had been an awful job. “Thank goodness, we’ve got it at last,” he growled. “Never mind, Pedro,” cried Poppy. “We shall be well repaid for all our trouble.” And then Pedro jumped into the hole and lifted out the box. "Let’s open it under the trees,” he said. Nobody will see us there! They little knew that Polly, Richard and Gwendoline had been watching them the whole time!

Poppy and Pedro had a terrible shock when they opened the box. They found an old boot and a note from the three chums: “With compliments," it said. It is quite unnecessary to describe Pedro's rage! Polly, Richard and Gwendoline stole silently away and hardly slept at all that night for laughter. I'm very much afraid, however, that Pedro will not be satisfied until he has his revenge
