WOMEN’S SOCIAL WORK
W.C.T.U. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Taranaki branch ot the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in the Baptist Hall, New Plymouth, yesterday. Mrs. X Jones presided over a good attendance. The Seamen’s Rest report, which was presented by Mrs. Craig, showed that the funds actually in hand amounted to £4BO. Donations had recently been received as follow:—■ Stratford shop day, £9 Is; £5 from Waverley; Hawera, £1; Inglewood W.C.T.U., 10s; anonymous, 10s. The treasurer’s report for the year showed a credit balance of £2B 19s, £5 of which was a. special donation towards a magic lantern for the Bands of Hope. The correspondence secretary reported that eleven ordinary meetings, seven home meetings and five notable days had been held during the year. It was reported that five members had passed away, some of them being active members and their places difficult to fill. Mrs. Brash as representative of the union on the Hospital Board, gave a short account of the work of the district nurse, and asked for help from any of the members towards an emergency fund for special cases of distress. Grants were made to the following supports: Rest room, “White Ribbon” and literature. Mrs. Oliver spoke of the splendid work done by Mr. Allen, of Hurworth, in the Band of Hope, and it was decided to send a letter of appreciation to the many in this district. The election of officers resulted as follow: President, Mrs. X. Jones; correspondence secretary, Mrs. Craig; rec. secretary, Mrs. Knight; vice president; Mr. Griffin; treasurer, Mrs. Whitham. Miss Drew, M.A., was also appointed treasurer during Mrs. Whitham'a illness. The following superintendents were appoint/’.: Cradle roll,. Mrs. Oliver; Band of Hope (country), Mi’s. Oliver, (town) Mrs. J. Craig; Evangelistic, Mrs. Cobb; Peace and Arbitration, Mrs. Scott: “White Ribbon,” Mrs. Dickenson; Maori Work, Mrs. Tuffery: Home meetings, Mrs. Douglas; Rest room, Mrs. Wilkie; maternity bag, Mrs. Hogarth; Hospital visitors and look out committee, Miss Sole, Miss King, Mrs. Fenwick, Mrs. Scott; Legal and Parliamentary, Mrs. Brash; Blackblocks and railwaymen, Mrs. Scott; notable days, Mrs. Chapman.
Mrs. Tuffery asked for assistance in her work, and several members have oflered to visit the Maoris in their meeting house and give all the assistance in their power.
Mrs. Cannel proposed a vote of thanks to the retiring officers and superintendents and the meeting closed with the benediction.
