FINE DAIRY ANIMALS

INTEREST K THE AWARDS. AMUSEMENT OF GYMKHANA. At the judging rings, a large gathering of farmers was early encircling the areas set apart for the breed in which they were particularly interested, and throughout the judging, the keenest attention was given to decisions of the judges. It is a compliment to these gentlemen that the judging was got through expeditiously, all but the lengthy Jersey eksses being completed in record time and to the general satisfaction of the owners of the exhibited stock. In this connection a word of praise is due the stewards and chairman of sections for assiduous attention to their duties and the complete arrangements made for the convenience of exhibitors and judges alike. The secretary (Mr. M. C. Crighton) and his assistant (Mr. R. McCay) had a strenuous day, but so complete was the organisation of the whole show tflat their administrative difficulties were reduced to a minimum. In view of the recent awards at the Royal Show held at Auckland a good deal of interest was attached to the appearance of Mr. Guy Bell’s Pinwood’s Viola, which was shown with distinction at Auckland, and which confirmed the favourable impression she then made by being placed first in the two-year-old Jersey heifer class. Messrs Baldwin and Se®s’ Ngatoro Betty Alcartra, which gained a v.h.e. at Auckland, also «gttreeted interest, but was only placed third in her class among the Friesian entries. During the afternoon peals of laughter echoing from the packed stands bore witness to the popularity of the events scheduled for the motor gymkhana. There is always an attraction about a speeding car. and when the drivers compete in thrilling contests within a circumscribed area, the public can be sure -of an exciting and interesting time. The gymkhana was an instant success and was doubtless responsible for the exceptional attendance. For the rest, visitors found plenty to occupy their time in inspecting the numerous attractively-arranged trade displays and patronising the usual array of merry-go-rounds and side-shows. Luncheon arrangements were in the efficient hands of Dustin’s, Ltd., where quick service made lunch and afternoon tea an enjoyable institution. Musie on the grounds was provided by the drum and fife band from the Hawera Main School. During the day the secretary received a wire from Colonel C. J. Reakes, Direc-tor-General of Agriculture, expressing regret at being unable to attend the show, but conveying his best wishes for the success of the fixture. The gate takings amounted to £B3, as against the sum of £67 received in entrance fees on the first day last year, an increase of £l6. To-morrow will be People’s Day, when the Grand Parade will be a feature of the programme. Interesting events such as trotting'exhibitions in the ring, pony leaping, jumping competitions and other exciting equestrian contests should make the showground a centre for many hundreds of people bent upon a thorough afternoon’s enjoyment.
