CRIMINALS ESCAPE GAOL
FOUR MEN SCALE GAOL WALLS.
By Telegraph—Press Assn.--Copyright. Hobart, Nov. 22,
The police are scouring the country for two of four desperate criminals who escaped from Hobart gaol on Sunday afternoon. The fourth escapee, jumping from the prison wall, broke his leg and was recaptured. The men, with other - prisoners, were attending a Salvation Army meeting in the exercise yard and were not missed till a boy informed the police that he had seen three prisoners running along the street. It is supposed that they took advantage of the meeting to evade the guard and scale the prison buildings, then drop from the wall, 14 feet high. , An armed party of police recaptured one of the escapees, named Downs, a long sentence man, five miles from the city. He refused to surrender and invited the police to fire but was overpowered after a struggle. The two others were in hiding, near by and managed to elude the police.
