LOCAL AND GENERAL.

At Hastings, England, a 25-foot fish, on being hauled on board a boat, bit the angler severely on the hand. It is reported that his only regret is that the scars will disappear. A shark said to be about 10 feet in length swam in among the launches off the Newton King wharf on Monday, and after remaining about an hour in the vicinity disappeared round the end of the breakwater.

Mr. T. A. Winks, a member of the Dairy Control Board, stated yesterday that he was in receipt of a telegram from the secretary of the board, Mr. Brash, notifying the sale of a large quantity of last season's butter and cheese at very satisfactory prices. Mr. Winks stated that full particulars would probably be published shortly. Recently there was a scare in Vancouver reminiscent of the leopard fiasco in Auckland. Some elephants got astray, and one defied for many days every endeavour to recapture it. A Winnipeg paper Ims a sly dig at British Columbia as a great place for sea serpents, tame elephants that go wild, Tories, meteors and other unearthly manifestations.

“I am a dairy farmer, going hard from 4 o’clock in the morning every day of the week, and I am afraid I shall be asleep this afternoon if you ask me to staj’ here all day,” said a summoned juror in the Supreme Court at New Plymouth esterday, in applying for exemption from service on the common jury. “You look pretty wide awake now,” observed His Honour, the Hon. C. P. Skerrett. To the evident satisfaction of the dairy farmer the clerk of the court intimated that he thought there would be sufficient jurors for the session without the applicant, and he was accordingly discharged. The pay-out by the Eltham Dairy Company on Saturday last was Is per lb for butter-fat for cheese-making and lid for butter. The pay out for the same period last year was la (id for butter fat either cheese or butter. During the last month 313,4461 b of butterfat have been received and £15,647 paid out, as against 258,6971 b of butter fat received and £19,377 paid out during the November period in 1925. Thus although there is an increased production of 17i per eent., there is a decreased pay out of £3.730, or 19.3 per cent. A final payment on last season’s supply of £4,348 was also paid out this mouth, thus making this month's pay-out total £19,995. —Argus.

An infant aged 14 months was admitted to a private hospital at Eltham yesterday suffering from burns sustained in a manner that shows how t.mplc an accident may occur. The little toddler, while tl<e attention of the mother was momentarily diverted, picked up a comb that had been left on a rhair and placed it through the bars of the kitchen grate. The comb happened tb be of celluloid, and at once blazed up when the child drew it out of the fire, with the result that the child’* face wus somewhat severely burnt. First aid remedies were quickly applied, and after receiving medical attention the child was .aken to the private hospital.
