HAWERA TRACK NOTES, Benzora and Lethal went half a mile in 55sec. Benzora was pulled up through breaking a blood vessel. He seemed all right after his mishap when leaving the course. Blue Peter went three furlongs in 4lsec. Sky Point went four furlongs in 55sec. He carried a light weight and was going along easily. Bisox and Lady Anstruther went, five furlongs in Imin. lOsec., Bisox carrying most weight. Sea Star was too good for Bonogne over four furlongs in 55sec. The Lamb went four furlongs by himself in 54Jsec. He should soon win over a distance of ground. galloped once round in Imin. 55sec. and then jumped two fences. Lady Cavendish and Lady Bentick finished in that order over four furlongs in 54sec. Euphonium, Tip Tree and Eka finished in that order, all close together, over five furlongs in Imin. lOsec. Alaric was working better than Glengariff once round (no time taken). Pop Off is working extra well at Waverley, and his owner expects him to run well at Woodville. Roman led Subjection over two fences, Subjection showing up well for his first schooling lesson. Rehutai and Shut-Eye went once round over five fences. The grey mare pulled hard throughout. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Although heavy rain fell prior to the Levin meeting on Saturday the course was in good order, as shown by the times recorded. But for the rain the track would have been very hard indeed. Gauntlet and Mata stood out on their own amongst the hurdlers seen out at Levin, but neither is engaged at Ashhurst to-morrow. Of those engaged at both places, Axle ran badly on Saturday; Tempean was a poor third, just in front of Empire Camp; Merry Sarto was pulled up, and Salamis and Risk fell. None of this bunch appears dangerous at Ashhurst, where the quality, as represented by Killoch, Good Mark, Garzon, Taraakana and Blood Red appears to be rather superior. « • • « Kilmezzo won the Maiden Bare and dead-heated for first money in the Hokio Hack Handicap at Levin, and is therefore not eligible for the Maiden Stakes at Ashhurst. Molto, third in the maiden at Levin, is in the same class of event at Ashhurst. as are Eloquent. Teremoana and Doe. all of which finished a long way back on Saturday. Molto is not in the same class as White Ringlet, who ran well at Waverley, or the erratic Miss Pat, which was placed each day at the Rangitikei meeting in March, Commendation and Elthein finishing in front of the flllv.
Gold Box was not produced at Levin, but will probably be a runner in the Pohangina Handicap to-morrow, in which he meets Polyphemus at an advantage of 131bs. A quick beginner like Gold Box should show to advantage round the bende at Ashhurst. Penman ran in the Cup at Levin, and finished fifth. On that running Mr. Neagle may elect to start him in the longer race at Ashhurst. At all events, Gold Box should hold him safe at level weights over “six.”
The Komako Hack Handicap field tomorrow includes Starboard Light, Lin Arlington, Salamis, Some Lad, Kilmezzo, Take Take, Merle and General Wat, which all raced at Levin. Starboard Light ran wretchedly, but Lin Arlington won on the bit. Salamis took on the hurdles but, as reported above, fell. Kilmezzo ran two good races, and with ordinary luck might have won both. Some Lad ran greenly. General Wai had every chance bi the Weraroa Hack Handicap, but could only finish third. Merle ran unsighted. On Levin form Lin Arlington and Kilmezzo should run well at Ashhurst if not too heavily rehandicapped, and amongst the new “cattle” engaged, Bank Note and Rising Star may give some trouble.
Of the Ashhurst Cup horses, Kilfaire (third), and Nukufnai (fourth) shaped well in the Levin Cup. Mali Jong was never dangerous, nor were Misgovern and Stream. Penman, as already stated, was fifth, while Santonio finished in a similar place in the sprint race. Of this lot, Kilfaire would only require to run honestly to have a chance at Ashhurst, and Killoera (a winner over a mile at Riccarton) and Sunshot should also go well.
The Siberia Hack Handicap at Ashhurst may attract Starboard Light, Volplane, Ad’dlepate, Royal Land. The Bolter, Molto, Twink and Propellor, which all ran on Saturday. Royal Land and The Bolter were third and fourth in the Hokio Hack Handicap; Twink third in the Mako Mako Hack Handicap, and Molto in a similar place in the Maiden race. The performance of Royal Land was the best of this quartette. New horses to be met with at Ashhurst include Horomea, Wilderness, Cerf and Bunk Draft, and of this lot Cerf has the best recent form.
Lin Arlington is also engaged in the Raumai Handicap at Ashhurst, and if he draws a good position at the seven furlongs post, and hops out smartly, may take some catching. The form of Birthmark, Misgovern, Agitato and Stream was poor on Saturday. Killoera (if reserved ), Prince Hal (who always races well at Ashhurst), and Monaghan will all make Lin Arlington gallop, and the race bears a very open appearance.
The concluding event at Ashhurst has also drawn a good field. General Wai (third) shaped best of those seen out at Levin, but Bonhomme might do better over a mile than he did in the longer race on Saturday. Brigadier Bill runs a good mile also. Boy was saddled up twice on Saturday and on his showing is hardlv worth going on with. « ft ' * » Prospects for Ashhurst are favourable, the weather promising to be fine, while the track is fast.
