(By “Equitable.”} Flags will be flying at Alexandra Park to-day for the opening of the Otahuhu spring meeting. Handicapper J. T. Reid looks as if he will make goad as a handicapper. The fields are large and if given fine weather this club should have a successful meeting. * * * * The second day of the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting takes place to-day. The Hawera-trained pacer Mastet Cote, is the only horse taking part from Taranaki Van Rich, the Palmerston Northtrained nnopr, is n-'r-c’v treated in the
Nelson Cup. Last season he won in 4.46 and to-day is off the mark. * ' * '* *
W. Hughes, who has acted as private trainer to R. Vautier at Palmerston North for the past couple of seasons, is resigning from training after the Nelson meeting. It is reported that R. Alexander will take over the team.
Old Dentistry, the trotter, cleaned up the programme as a harness hon e at the last Wanganui show, three firsts and the champion ribbon going to him. His owner was as pfeased as if he had won the Roe Handicap.
Miss Native, the Palmerston Northowned and trained mare, is oil the front m the Introductory Handicap to-day at Auckland, and if .young Jack Keunerley can keep her head cool she should go well. * * * *
Priscilla Dean was all the rage a couple of seasons ago, and good judges reckoned this well-bred mare would reach cup class. She is off the front of the Mangere Handicap. Although she has not had a race for 18 months, Jim Bullock has her stepping well. * * * #
The Onehunga Handicap, which is a 4.40 class, has the weakest field of the day. The Hawera-trained Van Cap is engaged and if he is anywhere at all like himself Phil Green may get a return for the time he has spent on the speedy son of Van Coronado. William the Great off the 12yds mark, is a promising pacer and may start favourite.
Sid August will be behind Nelson Fame in the big. race of the day, and the full brother to Nelson Derby may be favourite. On his win last month Handicapper Reid has treated the son of Nelson Bingen well.
Bingen King, on 24yds, and Bingen Star, on 36, are a couple of speedy pacers which can elap on the pace for a mile and a-half, and, with Golden Stone off the front, it looks as if the Stewards’ will be a fast race.
The Tartar ie nicely treated in the Campbell Handicap. This is tbe big race for straight-out trotters. The Tartar has more speed than most of them, but is very “iffy” at the peg. Peter Dean, on the 72yds mark, has improved since going into Harry Kinnemont’s stable, and won the £lOO prize for the best trotter at last week’s Royal Show.
Hughio Wallace, St. Maura and Dick Dillon are three speeds, level-headed pacers off the 12yds mark in the Massey Memorial Handicap, and they are likely to carry a fair share of the public’s money. Outside of these three Sid August has Lord Nepeau, and with a bit of luck might do well.
Although Napper accepted in the mile saddle ho will not make the trip. Clem Le Campion says he will wait and take the “big stuff” on at Christmas time. Napper is coming back to hie best form.
There is a speedy team of horses in the mile saddle and this race looks very open. Those that have proved that they can carry weight are Tranquil, Stanmore, Brendo and Rua Pere. If the track is at all dry this will be a fast race.
M. Oliver has High Sea engaged at Nelson. This well-bred young pacer was in the boom last season and cleaned up a couple of heats. It would not be a surprise to see him land a stake on the trip for the Ashhurst trainer.
Native King, the full brother to that good horse Nelson Derby, who is at the stud at Palmerston North, has a full book. It is reported that next season this well-bred trotter is likely to stand the season in Taranaki.
The Palmerston North owner, R. Vautier, who has fourteen horses in work, is likely to lighten h>. team for the coming season on account of his farm taking up most of his time.
