SPLENDID RESPONSE
PLUNKET DAY APPEAL THREE HUNDRED POUNDS RAISED. EFFORT IN NEW PLYMOUTH. Over £3OO was the amount obtained by the New Plymouth branch of the Plunket Society in their annual appeal yesterday to the residents of the town and surrounding districts. The result is considered highly satisfactory by all responsible for the organisation of the appeal, and the committee greatly appreciate the excellent support accorded the society. A thorough street collection and house-to-house canvass was carried out by the many collectors yesterday morning. That the public were generous in their giving was indicated by the number of coins of large denomination collected, and also by the number of red badges, selling at 2s 6d, being worn by people in the town yesterday. Sweets, flowers, produce, etc., were displayed in abundance upin the various stalls erected, some in Devon Street and others in the shop in Currie Street, which was generously placed at the disposal of the society by Messrs. Sole Bros.
Committees of ladies, of which Mrs. A. M. Mae Diarmid was the head, were responsible for the capable and energetic manner in which these stalls were conducted. Several ingenious competitions, which were in the capable hands of a number of young ladies, added their quota to the day’s takings. A band of itinerant musicians visiting the town generously gave its services in the collecting, the amount raised by them being £3. The proceeds of the Buick garage competition to estimate the mileage done by the car running continuously for seven days, each estimate to be made at the cost of one penny, are yet to come to hand. The third edition of the Plunket cookery book was on sale. The whole of the two previous issues of 2000 copies each has been sold right out. This book makes a very suitable gift for friends at any time, but with the Christmas season approaching its appearance should be particularly welcome. LIST OF COLLECTORS.
