HOSPITAL AFIRE

MANY CHILDREN IN PERIL PROMPT ACTION BY THE STAFF. SUDDEN OUTBREAK AT ROTORUA. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Rotorua, Nov. 18. Last night a fire broke out in the King George V. Hospital, adjoining No. 2 ward, where 30 children patients were lying. The fire commenced in the annexe, where a mother with twin babies five hours’ old were housed. In a few moments the wards were enveloped in smoke. The staff effected a well-ordered retreat, removing every patient without mishap. The brigade promptly ran a lead through the wards, attacking the fire from the rear with a powerful water supply, and so averting the danger of complete destruction of the whole hospital, some of which was built of the flimsiest material. The patients vacated from the wards were returned without mishap by midnight, with no ill-effects. The cause of the fire was a defective chimney.
