CENTENARIAN’S DEATH
RESIDENT OF NORSEWOOD. EARLY EXPERIENCES RECALLED. Bv Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Nov. 16. A well-known resident of the Norsewood district, Mr. Martin Gorinski, died at his residence at the age of 100 years. He celebrated his 100th birthday on October 8. A native of Posen, Poland, Mr. Gorinski experienced some of the turmoils through which his native country passed, and had in his possession three medals, mementoes of the active part he had played as a soldier. About 60 years ago Mr. Gorinski, who by profession was an engineer, came to the Dominion in the sailing ship Fitzrighton, together with his wife and members of his family. After an eventful voyage, which was extended by an additional month as the result of havoc wrought bystorms, during which the ship drifted far out of its course pending the reerection of new masts and the replacing of canvas, Napier was % reached in safety. It was the new arrival's intention to take up farming at Norsewood, and on landing, a trek overland via Takapau was commenced, the journey being accomplished on foot under extreme difficulties.
Although Mr. Gorinski conducted farming operations in that locality for about 43 years, there were periods when he was employed building railway lines in that section. In his earlier years Mr. Gorinski took an active interest in local affairs at Norsewood, and was a member of the Norsewood Road Board for a number of years. He also held a seat on the school committee. His wife died about 30 years ago. Mr. Gorinski leaves two sens and one daughter. There are 24 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
