WAIKATO EARTHQUAKES
PURELY SOCIAL CHARACTER RESIDENTS STILL ANXIOUS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Morrinsville, Nov. 17. There were no further shocks at Morrinsville last night. A slight tremor was felt to-day. The damage already- done is extensive, Concrete and brick buildings have been cracked and are liable to collapse. The walls are supported bybeams. Anxiety- continues. Wellington, Last Night. Purely local in their origin, the Morrinsville earthquakes have left only a slight trace on the seismological records of the Dominion Observatory. These earthquakes may, as Dr. C. E. Adams, the Dominion seismologist points out, cause considerable commotion at their place of origin, but their energy effect is small, and therefore causes but slight markings on the photographic records in the observatory. He added that the most intensive Taupo shocks some years ago were but faintly recorded in Wellington. The real value of the seismological instruments in the Dominion Observatory- lay in the fact that they recorded worldwide shocks and provided data for the scientific correlation of observations.
