EDUCATION SYLLABUS
REVISING PRIMARY COURSE. WORK OF UPPER STANDARDS. Wellington, Nov. 16. In accordance with a recommendation made by the council of education last July the Education Department is setting up a committee consisting of specialist teachers and administrative officers to revise the primary school curriculum. The committee will make investigations with a view to such changes being made in the programme of work for standards V and VI, and for the first two years of the secondary school courses, as shall secure proper correlation. The following have been invited to act as members of the committee: —Mr. B. N. T. Blacke, headmaster of the Thorndon Normal School; Miss Carnachan, primary school teacher, Auckland, and a member of the council of education, and Miss Kennedy, Auckland Normal School, to represent the primary school teachers; Professor Lawson, professor of education at Otago University, to represent the training colleges; Dr. J. W. Mcllwraith, senior inspector at Napier, and Mr. M. McLeod, senior inspector at Christchurch, to represent the inspectors of schools; Mr. W. Thomas, principal of the Timaru Boys’ High School, to represent the secondary schools; Mr. A. Marshall, late principal ot the Technical College at Dunedin, to represent the technical schools; Mr. T. U Wells, a member of the Auckland Education Board and formerly a headmaster at Auckland, to represent the education boards; Mr. W. Dinwiddle, of Napier, to represent the school committees.
The committee’s investigations will extend over several months. It is proposed tc call the committee together before the end of this year, in order that the members may have a preliminary discussion and set up sub-committees to deal with different parts of the syllabus. Early in the new year the committee will meet again to discuss the findings of the sub-committees and the possibility of making progress with the preparation of the report.
