MOTORISTS’ INTERESTS

THE TARANAKI ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Taranaki Automobile Association was held in the secretary’s office last night. Present: Messrs F. H. Blundell (in the chair), R. Day, A. B. C. Gibson, W. C. Weston, Dr. Adamson (Waitara), R. Stuart (Inglewood), T. Petty, G. Farquhar, R. Aroa, Clarke, T. W. Morris (Oakura), W. Fuller, R. H. Pigott, Judd (organiser), and the secretary (Mr. V. Duff). Apologies were received for the absence of Messrs Johns and Amoore. The chairman took the opportunity of welcoming the new members of the association. It was decided that the next automobile run be made on some Sunday to be arranged by the chairman and secretary, and that the Tariki hydro works be the objective. Mr. Petty was added to the signs committee. It was resolved to call a meeting of the Inglewood members with a view to forming a local branch of the association. A letter was received from the North Island Motor Union dealing with the careless manner in which motorists were in the habit of passing drovers with dogs, whereby many valuable dogs had been killed.— ; lt was resolved to write to the union stating that members of the association were not aware of the fact that valuable dogs had been killed but that members would be again requested to exercise every caA. With reference to the association's remit to the union urging a reduction in the heavy traffic tax upon farmers with lorries, the union advised that the matter had been considered, but since no provision had been made in the Act it was considered a dangerous precedent to interfere. It was decided to forward the union a copy of the report of, the proceedings at a meeting of the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association, which carried a recommendation to local bodies in Taranaki not to collect the fees from farmers’ private milk lorries. A letter was received from the District Highways’ Council stating that during last summer considerable obstruction had been caused on the Clifton Road stock track by campers pitching their camps and parking cars across the road reserve near Tongaporutu bridge, thus interfering with the driving of stock. It was suggested by the Highways’ Council that the association send an officer to inspect the site in company with Mr. P. B. Townsley, assistant road engineer, Tongaporutu, and arrange to have necessary notices erected directing campers to keep the roadway open t'o stock traffic, by putting the tents back in line with the fence. The matter was referred to the signs committee for attention. Thirty-one new members were elected to the association. It was resolved that minutes of meetings be sent to the association's agents throughout Taranaki. The organiser reported that at the Egmont Road crossing the hedge required cutting back and that at the Smart Road crossing certain trees should be cut back and an earth bank left by the Railway Department should be removed and danger signals erected. It was resolved to send a copy of the organiser’s report to the Railway Department, requesting them to remove the bank. The matter of attending to the cutting back of the trees was left in the hands of the chairman for attention. It was decided to request the signs committee to erect a sign on the Koru Road to assist motorists in ascertaining the site of the pa. It was resolved that when members move from one district to another notification of that fact be given to the association in the new district so that such members would not be lost to the association.
