THE ROYAL SHOW

GREAT CROWDS AT EPSOM BRILLIANT SPECTACLE PROVIDED. SUCCESS OF TARANAKI STOCK. (By Wire —Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. All roads led to the Epsom showground to-day for the People’s Day at Auckland’s first Royal Show. From early morning crowded special trains brought people from all parts of the province to reinforce those who had arrived the day before, and still more crowded tramears carried town and coun. try folk alike to their destination. The huge assemblage, easily a record for the ground, was in its way as great a credit to the city and province as the very excellent livestock that Auckland had sent to compete at the show. The attendance, helped as it was by the half-holiday which was declared for the occasion, was equal to the best expectations of the show executive. His Excellency the Governor-General again honoured the show with his presence, and this time was accompanied by Lady Alice Fergusson. At 1.15 His Excellency decorated with Royal Championship ribbons the stock which had received awards the day before. Afterwards the Vice-Regal party witnessed the grand parade and subsequent competitions and displays from a box in the main grandstand. A fine programme of events had been provided, of which the foremost was a grand parade of prize horses, cattle and dogs. It made a fine spectacle from the grandstand. Afterwards came jumping competitions. An excellent display of physical drill and games was given by the Auckland Inter-house Girls’ Sports Association, the girls making a pretty picture on the lawn in their bright vari-coloured costumes. A naval cadets’ team from H. Philomel attracted a great deal of interest with their exhibition of gun drill. The programme also included a pony trot and a number of equestrian events. To-morrow, the last day of the show, more hunting and other competitions will be held from 10.30 a.'m. onwards. The Hamilton-Auckland cycle race will finish on the ground, and sales of cattle and sheep will be held. The balance of the judging was completed to-day. The only Taranaki com; petitors concerned were placed as follows: HORSE SECTION. Gelding, four years or over. —Moore Hunter Estate’s (Hawera) Boneer, first. Light Spring Cart Horse. —A. Lankow’s (Manaia) Toby, third. The several additional cattle awards made to-day did not include any Taranaki prize-winners, but the success of some breeders will be of interest to Taranaki producers. Messrs Ranstead Bros, gained the Taupiri Coal Mines, Ltd., challenge cup with Matangi Quality, and the same animal won the English Dairy Shorthorn Society’s cup for the best dairy Shorthorn. The district group competition for milking Shorthorns, was won by the Waikato breeders’ group.
