AS OTHERS “KNOW” US

THE "NEW ZEALAND" REGION. MOI NT ELMONT’S WANDERINGS. San Francisco, Oct. 20. A letter was recently sent to the largest department store in San Francisco, asking for information regarding the language “Mauri,” as listed among 26 different tongues spoken by members of the staff. The advertising manager replied as follows, showing a faint knowledge of the properties, even if he not know how to spell New Zealand: “We do not wonder that the language termed ‘Mauri’ in our advertisement was unknown to you. This is a mis-spelling and should bo ‘Maori,’ a South Sea Island dialect spoken to-day by natives ol the New Zealand region.” Another example appeared in the show window of a tourist office in San Francisco. A picture of an undoubted Mt. Egmont scene was labelled in large type; “Bush tract. Mount Egmont, Taranaki, South Island.” A call at the office resulted in pushing Mount Egmont back Into the North Island.
