TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Races at Levin on Saturday, Feilding handicaps are now due. The Ashhurst meeting takes place on Wednesday next. ; * * 8 e Rapine was the outstanding performer at Riccarton this week. & ft ft ft Oney Cox drew a blank at the Canterbury Metropolitan meeting. * * * a The successful Waikato sire, Quin Abbey, dropped dead early this week. * * * » Chips and Dellghtment were double winners at Hamilton, where Dave also recorded a first and-a second. * « * * Orchid was only saddled up once at Riccarton, being, sent home after running badly in the Stewards’ Handicap. * * * * After a long run of expensive failures, Black Cat (Absurd-Mascot) has been retired to the matrons' paddock. *** . * . The Canterbury meeting was responsible for a remarkable “shuffling” of riders, and the changes did not always turn up trumps I * ;♦ * * . Commendation Jias won good money at Riccarton, but his defeate there by Limerick, in the Challenge Stakes, and'by Rapine, in the Stead Cup, proved costly to his followers. • *- * * The lightweight, Tommy Green, only arrived home from Australia last week, and after riding Piuthair (third) on Wednesday, opened his winning account, on Clarinda on Saturday. Tommy has not lost his dash, and will be heard of again. * • * * Decreased totalisator turnovers are expected this year, but the Canterbury Jockey Club has little cause to. complain, the huge sum of £107,305 being handled at the recent, meeting, which is less than £lO,OO below the amount handled last year. * * • * Heavy rain and a thunderstorm adversely affected the attendance at the Canterbury trots on the third day, the tote figures slumping £20,000. Despite this, the Metropolitan Trotting Club meeting saw £156,787 10s put through the machines, which is just over £20,000 less than last year. «■ s a * Mint Leaf ran two fine races at the Waikato meeting, but had no- luck. It is pleasing, however, to note that he finished on strongly each day, his final run in the Cup race, one and a-half miles, suggesting that a good distance handicap should come his way shortly. a s «• • Royal Mint was troubled by the heavy going at Waikato, being unable to find his feet in the early stages of his races. On the top. of the ground he should soon make amends, as he is a good, game horse, and a bold finisher. # * * * When racing at Randwick, Battlement equalled the track record for a mile and three-quarters, and it was unfortunate that he should have gone wrong on the eve of the Canterbury meeting.. Stripped at his best, Battlement might have troubled Commendation in the Derby. * * * * “Dug.” Webster succeeded in winning a race at Riccarton with the Fordell cast off, Bonhomme, but benefited very little by the victory. With Roy Reed up, Bonhomme was sent out favourite for the Linwood Handicap on the opening day of the meeting, but ran badly. With an apprentice up, and when little fancied, he put down a good one in Taboo on Wednesday. * * * # After filling minor places in rich races like the Wanganui Guineas, Hawke’s Bay Guineas, Champion Plate, and New Zealand Derby, Seatown actually won a race, the Stonyhnrst Handicap, on Saturday, but only returned a short price. Chasing cracker-jacks like Lysander, Commendation and Beacon Light in weight-for-age races is a heart-breaking pastime, and the Archiestown gelding has not been spared very much. ft ft ft ft Cimabue, the bay son of Leighton and Delight, having, won the Avondale Stakes and C.J.C. Welcome Stakes, can now be regarded as the best two-year-old seen out this season. In the Welcome Stakes he spread-eagled a very smart field, Eulalie (a winner at Randwick), Agrion, and Ark Royal being amongst the number, and the time, 58 2-ssec., was nearly 2secs. faster than the best recorded since the distance of the race was extended to five furlongs in 1922. Machine Gun holds the Australian record for the distance, which he ran in 58secs. “dead” at Riccarton. * ft * * Another good two-year-old seen out at Riccarton was Royal Ceres, by Flying King—Lady Ceres. Nicely placed, the Aussie-bred colt won two -handicaps in good style, finishing brilliantly each time. Though possibly not in the same class as Cimabue, Eulalie and High Finance, Mr. A. McDonald’s colt is decidedly useful, and has proved a great bargain for his present owner. ft ft ft ft Splendid acceptances are carded for Ihe Levin meeting, and a number of Taranaki horses are engaged. Hipo has a handy weight (8.2) in the Cup, but may find Diogenes (8.4) hard to beat over a mile and a-quartdr. Epistle does not appear to be overweighted with 9.0 in the McDonald Memorial Handicap (Bst. minimum), and Gauntlet, Our Jack, Black Mint and Note are well placed in minor events.
