THE FIRST WOOL SALE

GOOD PRICES REALISED KEEN INTEREST MANIFESTED. SATISFACTION OF THE By Telegraph.—Preu Assodiuo... Wellington, Last Night More titan usual keenness was manifested in the first wool sale of the New Zealand wool season which was held in Wellington to-day. It was watched closely by all sections of the community from all parts of the country. Unusual interest was caused on the one hand by the hopeful anticipation by farmers of a good season, and on the other hand by the unpleasant realisation that trade throughout the British Empire Jiasl been affected by the reflection of the British coal strike and general industrial depression. None hoped for the figure attained at the opening sale of last year, for this was a temporary mistake, and a slight fall from the March rates was considered satisfactory. Ninety per cent, of the catalogues offered was cleared. A total of 11,179 bales was offered, which compared favourably with the offerings of the past two years, the total put forward for the first sale in 1925 being 9795 bales, and in 1924 7011 bales. The following prices were realised: Merino, 64/70, anil 00/64 super, 21d to 22.14; average, 17d to 20’d; inferior, 11 Id to 15d. Fine halfbred, 56/58, super, 17d to 19Jd; average, 12 Id to 16{d. The bulk of the offerings so far have been taken by Bradford and the United States. The operations of the Continental buyers, while they are not obtaining many lots, are keeping the market on a firm basis. The clip is particularly sound in the staple, the wool being well grown and light in condition.

Some attractive parcels are being submitted. bnt for the most part growers * are relying bn brokers’ advice, although in some cases their reserves are causing lots to be passed in. Prices so far aro from par to slightly in excess of the brokers’ valuations.
