EXPANSION OF PROVINCES

PROGRESS IN AUCKLAND. During the year ended March 31. 1926, the total 'increase of population (exclusive of Maoris) was 29,255. Tin net gain of population in the North Island was 18,830, or .2.31 per cent.; the increase in the South Island was 10,425, or 2.04 per cent, (remarks a report by the Census Office). As the excess of births over deaths in the North Island for the year was 11,140, and in the South Island 0029, the gain in population over and above the natural increase was 7690 for the North Island, and 4396 for the South. For the South Island this figure is liigbethan normal, and, no doubt, is due in part to the attraction of the South Seas Exhibition at Dunedin. In the intercensal period 1921-26 in creases of population (excluding Maoris) in the various provincial dis tricts have been as follow (percentage increase on 1921 census given in pare:, theses): — North Island.—Auckland, 55,30. (15.0); Hawke's Bay, 4644 (7.6); Tar;’ uaki, 5742 (9.3); Wellington, 21,80’ (10.0'. Total, 90,493 (12.2).
