UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM
EXPENDITURE IN DUNEDIN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Nov. 12. The effect of unemployment on the city finances is shown strikingly in the half-yearly statement: The municipal trading departments’ revenue throughout showed an increase of £31,345, but the expenditure showed an increase of £45,038, the net profit being £13,693 less than for the same period last year. The position is explained by the fact that in helping the unemployed the departments kept on excessive staffs no longer needed with the end of the Exhibition. doing in six months the work usually taking a year.
