DISTRICT NEWS.

YORK ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A most enjoyable day was spent by the children of the local school on Wednesday, tho 20th, when the committee arranged a treat for them in the shape of a table laden with cakes and lollies. Mesdames Hayes, King, Benefield, Potroz, Davis and Mr. Gilbert (our worthy teacher) had everything in order and the children voted it a day never to be forgotten. was held in the school in the evening. The school was tastefully decorated by Mrs. Davis. A presentation was made to Mr. Gilbert, who is leaving us. Mr. King, supported by Messrs. Hayes and Newstrowski, spoke of the good work done during Mr. Gilbert's twelve months with us and everybody regretted losing such a kind-hearted and efficient teacher. Mr. Benefield then presented Mr. Gilbert with a thermos flask and shaving mug from tho residents, and two tiny scholars, Leo Davis and Leslie King handed him a traveller’s companion. Mr. Gilbert thanked everybody for the kind washes. Everybody joined and sang “For He's a .Tolly Good Fellow.” Mr. Hayes acted as M.C. and kept things imoving merrily. The children sang a song In first-class style, speaking well of their teaching. A splendid supper was then handed around by the ladies. Miss Simmons has been appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. Gilbert. NORFOLK ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The breaking-up ceremony of the local school took place on Wednesday, Mr. A. Simmons (chairman) presiding and Mr. R. Trimble presenting the prizes. A fair number of parents and friends were present. In the school stood a Christmas tree, loaded with gifts for the little ones. After the head teacher (Mr. Wagstaff) had read his report, Mr. Trimble spoke in complimentary terms of the work of the school, and tendered some wise advice to the children, especially to those who would be leaving. The prize list is:—

On Wednesday, December 20, the breakingup ceremony and picnic in connection with the Tahora school was held in the school grounds. Although the weather was threatening in the morning, it cleared up about mid-day, and there was a fine afternoon. In addition to tho school children practically all the parents were present. Charlton; for collecting, Llyn Mantle 1, C. Marriner 2. In the absence of the. chairman through sickness, the Rev. John Craig, head teacher, presided. Tho chairman made an explanation" concerning a letter he had written to the board concerning toothbrush drill. He said that in writing the letter he had no intention of casting any reflection on the way tho drill was conducted; he merely wished information concerning the drill itself. If an impression had been created that he was referring to the teachers in any way ho was exceedingly sorry. ’ In thanking all those who had worked fcr the school during tin? year and those who had given special prizes, Mr. Craig made special mention of the successful work of the mistress. Miss Divohall. They were fortunate in having such a' capable mistress. All the sixth standard had gained proficiency certificates, and in the natural course of events wouhl.be leaving the school. He wished them every success in life.

The secretary of the coimnilttee (Mrs. Kennedy) said that they wished to express their gratitude in the master for what he had done for the school. They all knew that the school had prospered under him. In addition to school work Mr. and Mrs. Craig conducted

a Sunday school, which was laying a good foundation for the future. The secretary also thanked Mrs. Craig for the most successful concert she had organised some time ago. Last Sunday the prizes in connection with the Tahora Sunday school were presented. TheYe fras a lafge attendance of both scholars and parents. Each scholar received a handsome book. The superintendent of the school, the Rev. John Craig, conducted a Christmas service for the children. It Is pleasing to know that so many scholars of the primary school also attend the Sunday school.
