CROPS IN CANTERBURY.

A FAVORABLE REVIEW. RAIN BRIGHTENS PROSPECTS. Christchurch, Dec. 20. The crops are looking particularly well throughout North and Mid-Canter-bury, and prospects for a yield up to that of last season have been immensely improved during the past month. The dry weather early in'the'spring kept oats back, and a number of fields, notably on the lighter country, are ready for cutting, while others should be fit in another week or ten clay:?. These are generally light, having “shot” prematurely under the conditions prevailing earlier. The growth of wheat has developed marvellously, and many nice-looking crops are already well in -ear in the country contiguous to the city, and an opinion expressed at the Arbitration Court on Tuesday was that the yield this year should be a little better than last —over 30 bushels. On the other hand, a Timaru expert opinion of a fortnight ago in regard to South Canterbury was 22 to 24 bushels. Conditions have greatly improved during the last fortnight, and this estimate is capable of adjustment, but it is doubtful if over the whole province last year’s average of 30 bushels will bo maintained. Rarely before, however, lias there been such a transformation in the prospects than during the past six weeks.
