IRELAND'S HOPE.
THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT. AN APPEAL FOR PEACE. EFFORT IN NEW YEAR. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copy'lght. Received Dec. 26, 5.5 p.m. •London, Dec. 22. There is some evidence of the Christmas spirit in Ireland, where eight former officers of the Republican army, who had taken no part in the fighting since the truce, sent a letter to the Dublin press appealing to the belligerent® to make peace. Sir James Craig (Premier of Ulster), in a message to Ulsterists, says: “God grant that the coming year may be a year of peace and goodwill, not only for Ulster, but for the whole of Ireland, and that the new Government® may be given a fair trial, so that each, ■within it® own sphere, may be able to work for the advancement of the people, and that the dissensions which •have torn the land will disappear.”— United Service.
RAILWAY PROTECTION. GARRISONED BLOCKHOUSES. INTRUDER'S SHOT AT SIGHT. Received Dec. 26, 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 24. The Daily Mail’s Dublin correspondent says the Government is determined to protect the railways. A system of blockhouse, similar to that adopted in the South African war, have been placed a few miles apart and garrisoned by 50 to 100 troops.
