THE EMPIRE’S TRADE.
PLANS FOR DEVELOPMENT. ECONOMIC CONFERENCE. London, December 1. Invitations have been despatenea to the Dominions for an “economic" conference,” and it U hoped the delegates will present practical and detailed proposals for development, co-operation, and greater trade within the Empire. The invitations have been addressed to the Prime Ministers or their substitutes. The British Government does not desire to lay down who should come, but if the Prime Ministers come they will be welcome. The date of the meetings is left open, but the invitation suggests between February and .June next, to suit the convenience of the Dominions. The London Daily Mail eays that the Government’s proposals for the restoration of trade mean that the nation realises the essential fact that the Empire provides a solution of the trade problem, and that the Dominions lepreeent markets far more valuable than the European markets, which the war has disabled. Under the heading of “Empire Goods the Cheapest,” the same paper urges the housewife to discard her prejudices and to realise that Australian dried fruits are the cheaper Many people, especially traders, for instance, are wed-
ed to Spanish raisins largely because they are chemically treated and look better.
