POST-OFFICE BURNED.

MAIL AND RECORDS SAVED. By Telegraph.—Press Association Pahiatua, Dec. 22. The Pongaroa post office, including the telephone bureau, was destroyed by fire at 12.30 this morning. The fire started in the adjoining butcher’s shop. Workmen have been sent to make temporary arrangements. Gamby’s butchery and Kerr’s bakery were destroyed. The Bank of New Zealand had a narrow escape, and several other buildings were scorched. There was a heavy gale, but a bucket brigade was formed, and mail matter and the majority of records saved. The postmaster, Mr. R. E. Williams, who lived on the premises with his family, is a heavy loser. Over 130 telephone subscribers are disconnected. Connection was obtained with Dannevirke and Pahiatua at 2 o’clock, and postal business resumed in temporary premises.
