BIG BUSINESS DEAL.
WHITE’S AND AMBURY’S. PURCHASE BY WHITE’S LIMITED. The fruition of negotiations which have been going on for some months past is made public in the announcement of the acquisition by Messrs. White Limited, drapers, New Plymouth, of the business of the neighboring 'firm of Messrs. W. and A. Ambury. Messrs. White Limited will enter into possession on February 1 next, and arrangements were made during the negotiations for the enlargement of the company to permit of two of the shareholders of Messrs Ambury taking an interest in • the combined concern. Mr. P. J. H. White will continue to art ae managing director, while Miss Harrison, who has had charge for many years of Messrs. Ambury’s showroom, will assume control of the showrooms in each establishment. Otherwise the businesses will be continued as at present, the customers of each concern purchasing their requirements in the separate buildings as heretofore.
Both firms have a long record in New Plymouth. Tn 1888 the late Mr. S. B. White founded the business bearing his name, when he acquired the small business of Mr. John Handy in Courtenay Street, which had then been running for some *25 or 30 years. *ln 1890 Messrs. W. and A. Ambury purchased the business of Mr. Walter Wright, which was then in the premises now occupied by Hannah and Co.’s boot shop at the corner of Devon and Brougham Streets, and which was. at that early date, one of the leading businesses in the town.
