Dr. W. H. It is possible that The Barb was the better horse, and he was most probably the better-looking of the two. Yet I fancy I know full well what the verdict of posterity will be. \Vhen a statue to Carbine has been erected in Olympia future generations will read in large letters on its plinth 'C.0.M..,’ and archaeologists of a later age will interpret this to mean: 'CarbiV. Ontimus. Maximus’ ('Carbine, Best and Greatest’).’’
It is now stated that Eurythmic was affected by the germs of influenza when he met with a hollow defeat in contesting the Melbourne Stakes. The chestnut, horse Is not expected to make a re-entry on the scene until the autumn meetings roll round. Eurythmic figures among the entrants for the Twenty-sixth Caulfield Futurity Stakes, in which ho is penalised to the extent of 71b, and which addition raises his impost, to 9.7. It was in the decision of the Futurity Stakes last February that Eurythmic registered a sensational performance by carrying a 201 b penalty tn victory, his exact poundage on that occasion being 10.7. The London Sportsman of October 10 reported that "there have been four attempts in America this year to 'stop’ horses by means of a sponge inserted in the nostr'l, and not one of the cruel wretches responsible for the outrages has been caught." The leading betting clubs In both Victor'a and New South Wales appear to be in a highly prosperous condition. Victorian Tattersails recently decided on the erection nf new premises nt a cost of something like £lOO.OOO. and City Tattersails Club i> Sydney has decided on new promises at a cost of £90,000.
