THE MERCURIAL MARK.
STRANGE RESULTS PRODUCED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Berlin. Dec. 19. The rise in the value of the mark has produced remarkable eeonom.-c vagaries in Germany. British coal in German coastal towns is actually cheaper than German, whereas in September it was triple the price. Factories and works are buying British coal. German bar steel is 100,000 marks per ton, which is above the world price. Exporters are quoting their wares in dollars and pounds and other stable currencies. They are now hoist with their own petard. Wages, working expenses, and raw materials bought in Germany must be paid for in marks, hence manufacturers are faced with the loss of 5000 to 10,000 marks on every pound received.
