A conference between members of the executive committee of the Boys and Girls’ Club (Northern Division), and the judges in the calf-rearing competition, was held on Monday afternoon, Mr. A. E. Washer presiding. There were also present: Messrs. J. Allen, W. Hall, A. Alexander, W. J. Honeyfleld, A. ,T. Luxton and R. Syme. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded the judges of the calf-rearing competition, the chairman referring in appreciative terms to the thorough imanner in which tliey had carried out tlieir duties. Eulogistic reference was also made to the excellent work performed by Mr. R. Syme in connection with both this and other competitions arranged by the committee in charge oi the clubs. The judges suitably acknowledged the thanks accorded them, and said whatever they had been able to do had been a work of pleasure. Opinions were somewhat divided as to the results of the competition, some members feeling that the question of cost had been too great a handicap: in other words, that some of the better conditioned calves had been unduly penalised in regard to cost. On the other hand, others expressed themselves as being quite satisfied with the results, contending that the connpetition had attained its object, which was to rear a good calf economically. Various suggestions were made by the judges hi regard to amending some of the conditions governing the competition, with the object of making them more equitable.
