FIRES.
THE CHRISTCHURCH BLAZE. By Telegraph.—Press Association Christchurch, Dec. 19. The fire which destroyed the wooden building occupied by Lutjohanns, bil-liard-table factory, was very rapid and intense, and threatened the adjoining Salvation Army barracks in brick, and also Wildey’s brick printing works. Dutjohanns’ building was owned by McCormick. The loss on the building and stock cannot be ascertained. Wildey’s had a lucky save, but considerable damage was done to the stock and machinery by water, the loss including quantities of stationery and railway time-tables. The insurances were as follow: Lutjohanns’ building £2OO. contents £1700; Wildey’s building £2OOO, machinery and plant £3035, ticket machine £6OO, stock in store £5OO and £2450. OTAKI SHOPS BURNED. Otaki, Dec. 19. A fire in the centre of the town last evening destroyed a shop occupied by Lang and Co., drapers, damaged Truelight’s and Dunn’s and an empty shop adjacent. The fire was checked by the fine work of the brigade, aided by brick walls.
