That Invercargill firms had had £lO,000 in commissions and about £2OOO in interest from him in nine years was a statement made bv a well-known Invercargill stock deafer at a meeting of creditors in his estate. Speaking at the children’s concert at Manaia last Wednesday, Mr. F. Mills said that many people made the foolish mistake of supposing that because a boy is clever he should not be a farmer. Farming nowadays was a highly specialised industry, requiring scientific training. Only the clever could hope to succeed as farmers. The abattoir report of the New Plymouth Borough Council for the month of November presented to meeting, was as follows: —’Slaughtered for local consumption 80 cows, 140 bullocks, 27 calves, 852 sheep, 276 lambs, 190 pigs and 1 sucking pig, tripes cleaned 215. The librarian of the Carnegie Institute reported on Monday:—For the period ended 12th inst, eleven new uteuioers have joined and eight left, a net gain of three. Books to the number of sixteen have been added to the library, consisting of twelve novels, four history, and two science. I regret to again have to report the theft of a periodical from the magazine room, the October number of Radio News, having been stolen. In view of the continued thefts from this room I would suggest that the committee endeavour to formulate a scheme to give the staff more efficient supervision over the room in question. “They would have blown the destructor up,” said a police officer in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court, on Saturday, when two fully-charged shells for a six-pound gun were handed over as exhibits, along with thirteen rifle cartridges, states'the Lyttelton Times. The case was one in which Mrs. Beatrice Elizabeth Ffust was charged with depositing explosive matter in a dust-bin. Mr. W. F. Tracey (counsel for defendand) pleaded guilty. He said the shells and cartridges had been left .n the house by a previous tenant, and Mrs. Frost, to get rid of them, put them on top of the dust-bin, intending to tell the collector. However, she missed him. The magistrate, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, in imposing a fine of 10s. and costs, said that defendant’s act had been one of thoughtless foolishness, and it was just such acts that the by-law wa meant to prevent or restrain.
The borough manager reported at Monday's meeting regarding the flotation of loans as follows: —Of the £57.000 loan £37,900 has been raised, and of the £22,500 (tramway) loan £6700 has been raised. This leaves £35,00 of the two loans yet unraised. In addition to the above there is the £1'9,000 loan of tramway extension to Westown, of which nc part has been raised. For some little'time past we have had little or no enquiries for debentures at 5A per cent., and if it is decided to endeavour tfc) raise th. £19,000 loan at that rate it will be necessary to advertise the loans outside of New Plymouth. The latter loan at the present time is the most urgent, and when the question of the rate of interest has been decided, and the debentures put upon the market, precedence should be given to the £19,000 loan.
