A facetious correspondent expresses the opinion that the reason Gazeworthy went up 8 lb in the Railway Handicap for winning a hack race at Woodville was because she was in the boom as soon as the weights appeared for the big Ellerslie sprint. Eonmark is several removes from a good one. hut Arthur Oliver has him In splendid work, and even though he cannot win a race, good second dividends help to Day the oats hill. According to a reports Insurrection is a very hot order for the Auckland Cup. Next In favor appear to be Royal Box, Foo Chow. Rapine. King’s Trumpeter, Scion, Gasbag and Income. Epitaph and Gazeworthy are in most demand for the Railway Handicap. Thon come Glentruin (an unlikely starter). Grotesque, The Hawke. Pavo and Pluto. It should be a great "double” for the layers. Hughie Cairns will probably have the mount on Insurrection in the Auckland Cup. The ex-New Zealander has ridden heaps of winners. both in big flat races and over obstacles, in 'Stralia, and there are few better judges of pace when it comes to distance racing. This is where most of our lads are found wanting. Mr. IT. Coyle’s weights for the Taranaki meeting promise to keep punters busy on Boxing Day. With Rouen and Stork also engaged at Ellerslie, It is hard to know how to treat thela chances here, though the top weight would be entitled to respect if started. Stork also would have a chance, and Eerie reads as well as any of the lightweights. Irapuka has earned all of 9.4 in the Flying Handicap, and Inah 8.3 and Pouma 7.0 are also nicely placed. Malingerer is also engaged at Awapuni. but if brought up for hurdle events should run prominently. Of i the Others, the Aucklander Mfanlwhangata Is not badljr trssted. Skylight; Hal-

gina and Master Curran are not over-weighted in the minor races. Some people are wondering how Rational will be able to "do” both the Manawatu and Auckland meetings at Christmas and New Year. Probably the Hawera crack will pick up the easy money offering at Awapuni on December 27, and will then be railed through to Auckland to contest the Royal Stakes, run on January 3.
